#7,783 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)
The storyline was fascinating if a little rushed. The instalove I can't live without them is overdone and rediculous. It started out her being pretty much traumatized by her past then all of a sudden she's with 6 guys and it's like nothing happened. You don't bounce back from feelings that strongly ingrained. The characters where pretty 2D with hardly any background . All in all it needed work and wasn't worth what I paid for it.
There's a naivety to the work that bothers me. Rose as a character is hard to believe because she's so mercurial. Her personality and emotional reaction as so much like a pendulum it's like getting whiplash to read it. Magic bond or not people with a history of sexual abuse that's not been dealt with don't instantly jump from afraid of the opposite sex to moving in with six men. I mean this girl has nightmares so bad that she averages two hours of sleep a night, in the beginning of the story she has severe social anxiety disorder and a complete aversion to any and all touch, then she meets these guys and she's hugging everyone, sitting on laps and going clubbing? It's not character growth, its downright ridiculous. I could accept a slow progression but it's one extreme to the other. None of the characters are fully developed and the world is so vague its unclear if the writer herself knows its rules and laws. I'm a strong believer in the potential of a story and of Allen sat down and fully established her characters and world building and then took the time to add that to her text allowing a more natural progression of emotion this story would definitely have potential. That said, as that's not the case it just falls short. Add to that the abrupt ending that gives little in the way of closure even for a series opener and it's clear to me that this series is not for me.
SPOILERS: Rose transfers to a new college only to shake her professors hand and receive the first part of her Awakening. She only feels the pain and strange awareness of the men she meet later explained as her Omas. While I found the storyline interesting, I felt there were some missed opportunities. First, the POV is from Rose who has no clue what's going on or the world the guys are introducing her to. It left the reader confused and wanting to know more even when she was too afraid to ask. Another POV might have helped clear some confusion and explained the new world better. Second, Rose has nightmares of a past experience but doesn't know why? It's unclear what the reason for her touch aversion is and there was no true explanation in this book. The guys are very standoffish but they are all supposed to love her and treasure her? There are several aspects of Rose and the guys behavior that are contradictory and unexplained. The end was also rushed so even more questions arose with no explanation for the reader. It took three months to find someone to help Sebastian, but no clue what happened to anyone else during those three months. Did Rose start her training? Did she learn more about the Phosopoi and what it means to be an Agora? Did the relationships develop more? We have no idea and hopefully the next book will give the reader more insight.
First of all let me start by saying that I loved this book! Plot line was amazing. Kinda a damsel in distress with 6 hot as hell hunky alpha types. Don’t let the damsel in distress fool you though, I got a feeling as we see Rose start to grow and learn more about her own culture she’ll tirn into a regular badass! Can’t wait for book 2! Please please please publish it soon!CONS: MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS AHEAD!!!One thing that really confused me was how the author created the roles and characteristics behind some of the guys. I can tell there definitely a preference for Jackson as he is mentioned the most and is given the most “likeable†characteristics (I.e super speed, professor who also works at a hospital, and a hot as f#%! Royal,) really his badassary is limitless. He’s got all these cool ascoecta but he blushes when Rose talks about his heritage. Just seemed awkward to me. One minute he’s cool AF and confident then he’s shy and blushing.Jin, okay I was super excited to hear about mystery number 6. Soooo much build up within the first 60% of the book and then we start to learn about him and...meh. Ex-elite force super assasin, commander over men, can kill a man with a single touch BUT somehow he left all that to become a modal. Like WHAT! I’m so confused! Now he has his own clothes line. These sound like two COMPLETLY different characters. Maybe have the light hearted guy be the modal/fashion designer (Put in a troubled past to give him depth) and let Jin be all dark and broody. Again just super confused! All that aside though I would still highly recommend the book! This the four star rating! Loved all the sweet moments with he guys and how patient and protective they were to their Rose. Hopefully we will see more of that in the future!
I give books a five star rating when I like it and am eager to read a sequel, if applicable. I was glad I took a chance and bought the book.I enjoyed this most of the way, although it fell down a bit at the end, the writing and plot a little rushed to wind it up.Liked the female lead, she wasn't a shrew, which nowadays is rare. Liked the male characters as well and really want to find out what happens. I think this is a promising first book and hope the author develops the relationships and doesn't sacrifice the romance for convoluted plot twists in the second book to come.
I'm not going to describe the book as other people already have. So sometimes you buy a book on Amazon and after you are done you say to yourself now that was a waste of money. Well personally I would buy this again. I've read better and I read a whole heck of a lot worse. My only issue is that I don't really care for part 1, part 2 etc... One of my favorite authors give you the whole book for this same price so I'm not super thrilled with only getting part of the story. But overall I did like it. Hopefully I won't have to wait too long to get the next one. If I do have to wait a really long time then I'll down grade this to a 1 because a half written story is something I am not fond of. So here is to hoping there will be a Book 2
