Review
"Mullen has given us a deeply researched, deftly written book that is a joy to read. But, more importantly, by carefully exploring the intellectual and theological character of religious conversion in the American experience, he points the way toward a fresh synthesis that both enlivens and deepens the way we read American history."--Jay D. Green, Journal of American History"The Chance of Salvation deftly captures the chaotic nature of American religion in the 19th century... Mullen helps us see how a distinctly evangelical approach to salvation had ripple effects beyond evangelicals, and he should be commended for it."--Josh McMullen, Christianity Today"Americans switch religions more frequently than people from just about any other nation. Mullen connects this phenomenon with the distinctively, though not uniquely, American idea that religion is a choice rather than an inheritance... This well-written and innovative work will be enjoyed by students of American religious history and those interested in investigating the deeper historical roots of contemporary American spirituality."--Brian Sullivan, Library Journal"The Chance of Salvation: A History of Conversion in America is a marvelous book. Lincoln A. Mullen's style of writing is lucid, dynamic, and illuminating. ... Mullen has made a stunning contribution to the emerging field of conversion studies and to the history of the religious life of America. ... Recognizing that all conversions contain losses and gains, Mullen approaches his topic with both intellectual depth and nuance and with empathy for the struggles, losses, and victories of the millions of people who took new paths in their spiritual and religious lives in 19th-century America." --Lewis R. Rambo, Reading Religion"This freshly synthetic work shows how religious choice developed as the backbone of American religious life. In this first book by Lincoln Mullen, the unintended effects resulting from people choosing their own religion become manifest. Mullen exposes these ironies gently and clearly. This is an important book and a pleasure to read." --Amanda Porterfield, Church History

From the Back Cover
"This is an extraordinary book--the best-researched, and most wide-ranging ever written on the history of conversion in the United States. It shows that seeking and choosing are defining characteristics of American religion and have been for a long time. Every student of American religion, and anyone who has converted or knows a convert, will benefit from it." --Jonathan D. Sarna, author of American Judaism: A History "A riveting and important book that illuminates one of the most basic facts of American religious experience, which Mullen calls 'obligated choice.' He wisely interprets the widespread occurrence of religious conversions as well as the pervasive individualism of American religious experience." --Mark Noll, author of America's God: From Jonathan Edwards to Abraham Lincoln "Lincoln Mullen's survey of the rise of religious options in nineteenth-century America, and the way Americans came to have no choice but to have a choice, opens up a compelling new synthesis of American religious history. We see the path from assumed identities to the world of the 'will to believe' as never before, and through case studies ranging from white and black Protestants to Catholics, Jews, and Cherokees." --Paul Harvey, author of Christianity and Race in the American South: A History "A beautifully crafted, revealing, and indeed fascinating account of religious conversion in America--a story that weaves religious choice and obligation, gain and loss, individual difference and patterns of thought, agency and constraints. This book will be of interest to anyone who wants to understand the American idea that religious identity is a matter not of heritage but of choice." --Candy Gunther Brown, author of The Healing Gods: Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Christian America

This may be the most important book on American religion in recent history. Mullen makes a very compelling case that a regime of choice shaped every aspect of religious experience in the United States--even, notably, religious identities that don't especially value choice.
I preordered this one as soon as it became available on Amazon, I was not disappointed. It's so unique that I can't think of another recent history book, off hand, to compare it to. This will be the defintive text on conversion in America. We are witnessing the birth of a star in American religious history.
