Review

These are adorable books and ones that will be sure to interest your child with their bright colors, fun illustrations and simple words! Think about putting them in the next basket you make up for a baby shower! (Bless Their Hearts Mom 2012-03-27)The little board books are just the cutest books I think I have ever seen...The simplicity of these books is its genius. (Kid Lit Reviews 2012-04-02)These are the sweetest board books I have ever laid eyes on! Looking at these book-covers via online does not do them any justice at all! The coloring is gorgeous - vibrant and eye catching! The quality of these books just blows my mind - they are so sturdy, and definitely kid friendly. But what I adore the most - the theme to these books! I am a huge Alice in Wonderland fan - all of the main characters make their appearance in this book, each taking a turn teaching your bundle of joy different colors through Alice in Wonderland inspired illustrations. And these pictures are all so cute and captivating! (Margie Cortina Bumbles and Fairy Tales 2012-03-20)This book is beautiful and simple...The pages seem to come to life with the art and details of it. The pictures come to life on the pages and I know that any young child would be stimulated by all the multiple colors and pictures that are within these pages. I loved it!! (Laura Moore The Reading Nook 2012-04-02)This book is a excellent read and my daughter loved it. The pages are really colorful and full of adventure, she couldn't put the book down. (Stephaine Szostak cybertronianreviews.blogspot.com 2012-03-16)These books are wonderful! They are very sturdy and the pages are thick and easy for little chubby hands to turn. The illustrations are done by Alison Oliver and she did a great job. The colors are beautiful as well as the pictures. (Sherrie Plummer sherriesbooks.blogspot.com 2012-03-16)If you like your Alice in Wonderland editions bright, light on words, and difficult to destroy when thrown around the nursery, then check out Jennifer Adams’ new board book...The art by Alison Oliver is very bubbly and stylish, each page illustrating text such as “orange cat,” “blue caterpillar,” or “red hearts.” (Jennifer Adams Lewis Carroll Society of North America 2012-03-14)The "Alice in Wonderland" color primer provides a refreshing deviation from Adams' other BabyLit primers, all of which focus on counting. The many peculiar characters in Carroll's novel, such as the red Queen of Hearts and the time-conscious white rabbit, lend themselves to a natural introduction to colors. The literary ties are creative, but the illustrations take these primers to the next level and make them shine. Alison Oliver's illustration style is distinct with its bright colors and array of patterns that are sure to capture the attention and imagination of children. Even if parents are not well-versed in the literature, the images alone make these primers a worthwhile purchase. (Whitney Butters Deseret News 2012-03-03)“Alice in Wonderland: A Colors Primer” by Jennifer Adams and illustrated by Alison Oliver This is one of the greatest board book series out there. Designed to introduce the literary classics to the youngest readers, these books are delightfully fabulous. The two most recent, “Alice in Wonderland” and “Jane Eyre,” are marvelous, but also check out the first two, “Romeo and Juliet” and “Pride and Prejudice.” They are written by Utah’s Jennifer Adams and beautifully illustrated by the talented Alison Oliver. We have loved the Babylit series of books and own quite a few. This is probably my least favorite of the series. The illustrations are still lovely (and very different from the Disney version and the book's original illustrations, which, as someone who also collections Alie in Wonderland stuff, did delight me), as they are with the entire series. They pair the pictures with a single color, so it is truly a colors primer. It doesn't follow the story at all, which I also don't mind, but which some readers may not like. The issue I have with the book is that they show only a single illustration with the single word (a color). However, there will be multiple colors in the picture and it is not always clear which color is suppose to be the dominate color. Additionally, on a few of the pages the choice of text color and background color make it hard to read.

This is a very adorable way to teach colors! I don’t understand all of the negative reviewers that were apparently expecting this tiny board book that is called a “color primer” to include the story. I knew that this was specifically for the purpose of teaching of colors & enjoyed the illustrations & nod to the original literature. The reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5, is the orange cat is hard to see on the warm pink background & the blue caterpillar is very teal.

Im a fan of many of the books in this series, but some feel a bit forced, and this one misses the mark with me. It says its a color primer, but many of the colors it labels are not obvious for a small child. Also, some of the colors are not contrasting enough and are difficult to make out, like having an orange cat on a pink background. Not well thought out or executed in my opinion, if you want an introduction to this series, I would buy one of the other books instead.

This has been perfect for my girls, from ages 12mo-18mo, and I imagine they'll continue to enjoy it in the months to come. While this may not be complex enough for a 3yr old, it is perfect for the 1-2 age range. It teaches colors, and for parents with a little creativity, you can take the learning a step further by pointing out other things on the pages. The thick pages make it easier for a toddler to turn them & not damage them.

My 11 month old daughter is obsessed with the Pride & Prejudice Baby Lit book... she pulls it out at least twice a day. I ordered Alice in Wonderland hoping for the same magic, but I agree with the poster who said the illustrations are great, but there's not enough content. The first time I read it to my daughter, I followed the text and she was bored. The second time, I skipped the text and just gave her a baby version of the story (e.g. "A magical white rabbit appeared... Alice followed him down a hole in her black shoes... inside, she saw three bottles..., etc.")... that held her attention much better. So if you remember and narrate the story of Alice in Wonderland, this is a fun book. But it's not quite as much fun if you just want to stick to what's written.

Baby lit books are our all time favorite books! They are small books, but that does not underestimate the goodness inside. We have ordered just about all of the baby lit books and love to swap them out during seasons and holidays. I also love that they have different primers and different types of learning for your little one. These books are great gift ideas, there are a lot of genres to choose from. The artwork and colors are bright and vivid, very pleasant to look at. The mommy and the teacher in me loves and approves these books!

All the books in this series are wonderful. My daughter enjoys them thoroughly, they are some of her favorite. This one in particular is one that is simple enough that she has it memorized. She LOVES that she can "read" it herself. She is so proud afterwards. Just a cute book that we both enjoy reading.

I have several other BabyLit books and my almost 1-yr old daughter loves them! The story is very very simplified, but the pictures are bright and fun and eye-catching and she loves turning the pages! Love that they also teach - counting, colors, shapes, etc! These will go in storage when outgrown to be passed on!

I've been on a tear with these rock biographies lately. Growing up in the 80's I was a big fan of Heart's big hair rock. Always loving songs like "What About Love" and "These Dreams." When I got into vinyl, I bought Dreamboat Annie and was amazed at how really great this band was. I had no idea from the commercial pop rock that I had been listening to. Listening to this audiobook narrated by the sisters (and a few friends) gave a lot of the candid history of the band including details of their military brat upbringing and more interesting, the Fleetwood Mac style escapades of the band members. If you're a fan of the band or maybe a budding female musician, read or listen to this book. A great history of a great band.

If you’re a fan of Heart, then this is a must read book. The Wilson sisters alternate telling their story with a few other narratives thrown in. It was interesting to read about their childhoods and how they got into music. They had a wonderful supportive family and reading about their parents was touching. Sometimes their paths were separate but their close relationship always drew them back together. It was meant to be. They were persistent despite many obstacles. I liked reading about how some of their biggest hits were inspired. Who was the “Magic Man”? Who was the “Barracuda”? I also appreciated the honesty in their narratives. Ann discusses the attention given her weight issues simply because she’s a woman, and Nancy relates her problems with infertility. But first and foremost, Ann and Nancy Wilson are talented musicians. I love that they’re still rocking on because they love it. They have a unique perspective being women in a male dominated field. Yes! Women can rock and do it well! Rock on sistas!

Real stories, well told- both the Audible and written versions. The audio is actually Ann&Nancy, Sue&Lynn. What a treat! (The guys are the narrator.) Unlike most 'stars', the Wilson girls had a very different view of achieving success. Like many of us who saw John&Paul on Ed Sullivan, playing a guitar/bass on stage became our passion and our job. Hearing each sister's story is both sad and refreshing. If anyone deserved to create the best sounding, most successful rock band to the world, it was the Wilson sisters! Sharing about their caring parents, Lou and John and their long-suffering guidance, provided that solid family background and that has never vanished. Reading this book, and hearing the girl's voices reminds one to re-listen to their songs and to watch their performance live on the recent reunion video with Steve, D'Rosh, Rog and the amazing Howman!-that will always give a lift to one's day, if not bring tears to your eyes and joy to your heart. The power and determination of Ann&Nancy are obvious-and this work shows that it was extremely hard work and had many setbacks and worldly conflicts which they overcame. For anyone who cares about Heart, this book will make you care more about Ann&Nancy than any ordinary 'fan' could. A meaningful showbiz tale. Thanks girls for documenting these decades of joy, setbacks and rewards for all of us!

The book is a first-person narrative of Ann and Nancy's life stories. They start with their childhood and take turns recalling home life, Mom and Dad, Ann's childhood struggles with her weight, and the night they saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, an event that changed their lives. There is Ann's first guitar, the young sisters performing for their teenage friends (Nancy wasn't even twelve), and so on. The book continues in like fashion through more than forty years, all the way to present (2012 is the latest date in the book, I think). If anyone is hoping for titillating Women of Rock debauchery, forget it. It isn't here. The Wilson sisters tell their stories they way anyone would. They recall people and events, and they reflect on how forces sometimes co-mingled and nudged their lives this way and that. They recall decisions they made and the outcomes of those decisions. They recall good times and not so good times. And, they reflect on the way things turned out.I came away from the book thinking of them more as people with a home life who just also happen to perform in a band. So much so, that I was sometimes surprised when some other Rock icon would pop in at one of their homes, which reminded me that these ladies are Rock Royalty!

This is an important book - more than most would think - given the fact that women in music STILL do not enjoy the same status as men.I've enjoyed Heart since their first album, Dreamboat Annie, was released but haven't followed them closely over the years. This book filled in gaps in knowledge and also lent a great insight into what makes the Wilsons' contributions so valuable. The multiple viewpoints offered in each chapter were very much appreciated, as the differences added a lot of depth to the story. Personal details are handled with care; it's obvious the Wilsons are not the typical "rock stars" or "celebrity" types. The book was easy and conversational; the tone of the speaker was apparent, and it was important that this wasn't overly tampered-with, though the copy could have used a little more editing in spots.I would like to see another book that deals more with the Wilsons' creative work specifically - a packaging of lyrics with accompanying graphics, perhaps!

As a hockey fan, I was excited to read about one of the greatest players in the history of the NHL. As the parent of young athletes, I was intrigued at the prospect of reading Patrick Roy's story from the perspective of his father. While I expected that he would gloss over some of St. Patrick's more controversial aspects, such was not the case. This is a pretty balanced look at a great athlete, who made some mistakes along the way. This is one of the best hockey biographies that I have ever read. The writing style is fluid and some of the descriptions are actually quite beautiful. I learned a great deal about Patrick, that I had never known before (he had a long history of playing on terrible teams before he became a pro), and I also learned of his proud French-Canadian heritage (along with a French-Canadian curse word). I couldn't put this book down. It was excellent.

If most people do not know yet, I typically read a hockey book for the holiday season. This year the book was read in Edmond, OK and not in Nova Scotia (but was read in honor of moving to Colorado). It was a little different atmosphere for the read. Most of my readers do not know much about hockey, but Patrick was one of the best goalies ever in the NHL. He was a legend as well as a controversial player because of his style, passion, and winning attitude. He played hockey for the first part of his career in Montreal which is a hot bed of hockey passion and intensity. He later was traded to Colorado where he played on two Stanley Cup winning teams. The book is written by his father which makes it a little bias on the views of the events. Typically the father takes the positive outlook on his son, and really who can blame him. The book is a lovely read because it brings me back to my childhood in Canada. As I read, I remember the events. The book provides some insider looks on the feelings, the passion to win, and what really made Patrick great all those years. By the end of the book, Patrick was an enduring figure in my life. It inspired me to "Win, nothing else."

This is an excellent read detailing the mind and character of one of history's greatest athletes. The detail provided about Roy's development and journey to the NHL is wonderful. This book does a fantastic job not only looking at Roy but at the evolution of the game of hockey and Roy's role in that evolution. As an Avalanche fan I was hoping to see more of the details and insight into Roy's career in Colorado and to see how he adapted on a personal level to such a radically different franchise. Obviously his play remained impeccable, but I'm curious as to how he competed and became comfortable in Colorado and how he felt on the experience of playing with the Abs. I would have liked to have seen more about his final two cup and the playoff leading u p to them. The playoffs leading to his first two cup wins were told with such details that it really drew me into the moment, I would have liked the same with the last two.Excellent book, makes me want to rush out to find an Avalanche Roy Jersey for sale!

Good read. What a great story on Patrick Roy. While reading this book I can see the love that a father shares with his son.

A somewhat self serving book by the subject's father. It does not come close to capturing Roy as a goalie or person. Needed to focus on one or the other.Absolutely nothing about his post playing days, which may be the most interesting part of his life.

While his early Pre and Junior work was interesting it was a bit Long Winded to read thrubut overall a very nice Bio

There are some who consider Patrick Roy to be the best goaltender in the history of the NHL. I’m not one of them. But I do think he’s one of the best, and perhaps the best if you go by some statistics. For instance, Roy played in more games than any other goalie in history. He won more playoff games than any other goalie in history, not even close. He won four Stanley Cups and three Vezina Trophies. All really good statistics. But he played from 1984 to 2003, 19 years. And while he was named to 11 All Star teams (why not 15, 16, or 17?), he was named First Team All Star only four times and Second Team All Star only twice. I think that’s pretty telling. And even though three Vezina Trophies for best goalie in the league is pretty impressive, are you telling me that the best goalie in HISTORY could only win three in NINETEEN years and he’s still the greatest ever? No, I don’t believe it. Even though this book sings his praises and, apparently, so do many other people, evidently not enough of his peers and NHL management thought highly enough of him to honor him while he played so that says a lot to me. And even though both Montreal and Colorado retired his jersey after he played for both teams and even though he made the Hall of Fame, I consider him to be merely one of the greatest goalies ever, although I hesitate to say who’s the best. Perhaps I would put him up with Billy Smith and Ken Dryden, among others. Grant Fuhr, to a far lesser degree. Some of the older goalies from previous eras, too, no doubt. The main problem with this book is it’s written by his father, who is a Quebec government official, not a sports writer or journalist, and certainly not objective. And to make matters more irritating, the first part of the book seems more intent upon describing the author’s own life and career rather than Patrick’s boyhood and beginnings. It’s rather hubristic. Eventually, though, Michel Roy settles down and starts telling Patrick’s story and it’s startling grim to start out with. His entire minor league career is ugly. He plays on horrible junior hockey teams, just wretched. And one thing I never understood is, while he was apparently decent, the few times his father listed his junior numbers, they weren’t that good, which his father attributed to his teammates’ ineptitude rather than his son’s, and so I never understood why Patrick went on to become considered the top junior goalie in the league at some point. His numbers sure didn’t reflect that and he sure never led his teams to winning seasons. Weird. Usually winners hoist their teams on their backs and lead their teams to winning seasons. Not Roy.Finally, he got invited to Montreal’s camp. He barely spoke English and had to play mostly in non-Quebec cities for the first time. It was difficult. He didn’t last and was sent back down, but the following year was back. His (real) rookie year in 1985-86 was good, but not great. But when Montreal made the playoffs, something happened and he caught fire and never stopped. He led the Canadiens to a Stanley Cup win and was named MVP of the series, which was pretty awesome for a rookie. And so it began. He had a series of difficulties with coaches in Montreal. During his first few seasons, for some reason, he was forced to share goaltending duties with another goalie, which was pretty humiliating, considering he was much better. There was a possible reason. In the juniors, he had hooked up with this young, new untraditional goalie coach who had helped him develop a new “butterfly” technique of goaltending, which the NHL had rarely seen and detested. His style was frowned upon and he was actually punished by numerous coaches for using his own style no matter how effective it was. It wasn’t until he had established himself with a new coach in Montreal, and with this goalie coach, that his career took off and he started winning lots of games and he started getting career lows in goals against averages. His second year was a down year, but then he came back and established himself. His general manager was always messing with the team though, trading good players to get new players, messing with the chemistry. It was tough to repeat as Stanley Cup champions with that going on. Nonetheless, Roy won Vezina Trophies in 1989, 1990, and 1992. And he led Montreal to another Stanley Cup victory in 1993. However, the team and even some fans began to get somewhat disenchanted with Roy by then, for reasons I never entirely understood. He was making too much money and was standing up to a new jerk coach. Big deal. So they did the unthinkable and traded him to Colorado in 1995, their old Quebec Nordiques nemesis recently moved to the Rockies. Roy would have to start all over again.By this time, Roy was married and had a couple of kids. One of my complaints about this book is his father mentions the fact that Patrick meets a pretty woman and starts seeing her. Later, surprise, they get married! Later, they apparently reproduce. The only time we actually see her at all is when they have a massive public fight on their front lawn in Colorado, which I thought was going to end their marriage, but which evidently did not. In fact, Michel Roy didn’t delve very much into Patrick’s inner being and psyche very much at all, other than to assert that he wanted to play and win more than anything and anyone else at all. Over and over again, he beats that into your head. It gets pretty repetitive.Whatever the case, Roy adapts to Colorado pretty quickly. His coach is his old agent in Quebec. He leads the team to a Stanley Cup win his first season there and becomes a huge celebrity in that state, according to his father, bigger than any other athlete in the history of Denver or Colorado, including John Elway, which I personally find ridiculous and impossible to believe. Utterly impossible. Roy kept putting up good numbers and Colorado eventually traded for aging superstar Raymond Bourque, who would likely be a Hall of Famer but had never won a Stanley Cup. The team decided to dedicate themselves to winning one for him, for some reason, and Roy made it his obsession. And they did in Bourque’s last year, 2001, when Roy won his third Conn Smythe award for playoff MVP while winning his fourth Stanley Cup. He then retired in 2003. After his retirement, he got involved in coaching junior hockey in Quebec and is now the coach of the Colorado Avalanche, his old team. This isn’t a bad book. At times, it’s fairly interesting. But I’ve read many better sports bios, as I’ve read a lot of them, and I’ve read better hockey bios. As I mentioned, I don’t think it helped that Patrick’s father wrote this. He really should have had an unrelated professional write this. It would have been more objective and written better with more and better information about the man himself, I’m guessing. Still, if you’re a fan of Roy, you’ll probably like it. If you’re a fan of Montreal or Colorado, you’ll probably like it. Even if you’re simply a hockey fan, it’s possible you’ll probably like it to some degree, like me. Otherwise, I’d probably avoid it. Cautiously recommended, but obviously only for hockey fans. No point in reading it otherwise.

This book was interesting in the beginning, but after a while the level of mundane and repetitive detail dragged it down. I couldn't finish it. You might try it if you not only really love hockey but are a big fan of Patrick Roy.

Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman, by Marc Tyler Nobleman

From School Library Journal

Grade 4–6—Nobleman portrays teenaged Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster as outcasts who found solace in the world of pulp magazines and comics. Their peers did not understand their fascination with tales of musclemen and detectives with gadgets, and their teachers deemed the stories that they loved to write and illustrate "trash." Despite these obstacles, the two friends continued writing and illustrating, and in 1934, Siegel had an avalanche of ideas about a new type of hero that he then shared with Shuster, who drew the first concept illustrations of Superman. It took another four years, however, before the superhero would make his public debut in Action Comics #1. MacDonald's illustrations are a tribute to 1930s pulp art, from the lines of the characters outlined in brown to the washes of yellow in the background. While the layout remains primarily in picture-book format, comic-book elements appear sporadically, such as with phrases separated from the rest of the text and placed in oval bubbles. One spread also uses panels to depict Siegel's thoughts as he conceptualized Superman. The story ends with the young men successfully landing a publisher. The afterword fills in more of the details, including Siegel and Shuster's long-running battle with DC Comics for a greater share of the profits, how their Jewish background affected Superman during World War II, and their final years. Boys of Steel is a solid introduction to the history of Superman's creation, especially for children who find an outlet in storytelling and art.—Kim T. From Booklist

*Starred Review* Though rich in thrilling big breaks and cultural touchstones, comic-book history appears most often in books for adults, such as Michael Chabon’s Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay (2000), inspired by the story of Superman’s creators. This book brings the young men behind the Man of Steel to a picture-book audience. Along with a compressed account of the partnership between nerdy high-school outcasts Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, Nobleman includes insights about superheroes’ cultural significance and the chord struck by Superman—a “hero who would always come home” even as World War II loomed on the horizon. It’s hard to imagine a better sidekick for the text than MacDonald’s illustrations, which capture the look of 1930s comics with their sepia-toned, stylized imagery, although some children may wish for more distinctions between Shuster and Siegel’s bespectacled faces. The narrative ends on an upbeat note, but the detailed, candid afterword clues youngsters into the creators’ bitter compensation battle with DC Comics. A bibliography and assurances that “all dialogue was excerpted from interviews” puts factual muscle on the narrative. Any kid who has scribbled caped crusaders in the margins of homework will find Shuster and Siegel’s accomplishment of interest; this robust treatment does their story justice. Grades 1-3. --Jennifer Mattson

While this book was a simple read and meant more for younger children, I still enjoyed it and learned more from it. For example, I knew that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were very close in age, but I didn't know that they were both born in 1914. And while I knew that Supermans origin has had many comparisons to the story of Moses, I didn't know until reading this book that the name Kal-El roughly translated into Hebrew may mean either "all that is God" or "all that God is".The book is essentially about inspiration, dogged determination and the success of creating one of the most iconic heroes of all time. Truly a mythological hero for our time that has affected and inspired many generations. There is some sadness or even tragedy to their story, but what they created is a legacy for us all to enjoy and thank them for.

Any Superman fan will be proud of this clever homage to the two creative guys who created the original Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman...arguably America's greatest pop culture icon. In its simplicity, this thin volume will appeal to the freshman comic fan but true historians and buffs will instantly recognize, appreciate and celebrate the honorific narrative of the Jerry & Joe's story and also of the beautiful illustrations that pay tribute to the original artwork found in the early Action Comics.Kudos to the creative forces behind this powerful little memoir. Somewhere in the heavenly portion of the Phantom Zone, Siegel & Schuster are smiling.

Nobleman has written a tender, well researched kid's biography of the two boys who created Superman. The illustrator adds to the ambiance and flavor of story. This is a great book for elementary students, especially those who love superheroes.

Fun story for boys who like comics. Only downside is that there are not enough words and the kindle format is a little tricky to navigate on the fire. My son loved the book though, and he is now in the process of making his own comic book that he is going to "sell" someday.

As much as I love this book, I wanted more. The book gives a brief description over VAST stretches of the lives of Siegal and Shuster.I felt like I was not given the whole story.

Left you wanting more. There is a bigger story that what was drawn here. Also believe if the format was change to more of a landscape format similar to Brad Meltzer's book it would be better. But overall good read

The book was terrific. It was great to get some insight on how the Superman character came to be especially since he is a part of our American culture. What is unbelievable is how the two men who created the Superman action hero were treated. Kids will love this book.

Very well written, insightful, and great story. The illustrations add to the story and help make the book more interesting for the younger crowd (and older crowd who appreciates comics). This book is one that can stay on the shelf for many years and enjoyed by generations.

Perfect addition to my needlepoint books. I'm interested in finishing some of my smaller projects myself. This book has great step by step directions to help me do that! Love it!

This is a very helpful book with several different projects and good illustrations. I'm glad I bought it. I read it through when it first arrived and found the instructions easy to follow along with the diagrams. I also bought a second Finishing 101 book, self published by pmazu@aol.com which is even more extensive if I really want to go whole hog and open a finishing business! But Sandy's book alone is just fine.

Someday I will have the courage to do my own finishing! This will be a big help.

Oldie, Goldie. Useful past finishing procedures.

Very good book with instructions for items other than pillows and pictures. I was glad to find other item finishing instructions and have enjoyed the variety shown in this book.

This instruction book is great. Lots of drwaings and very detailed how to's. I am looking forwardto trying the techniques out. The directions are very concise

Super book for needle pointers! Quick delivery, can't wait to use this book!!!

A great book that made me realize I don't want to do my own finishing. If you do want to do your own, this book will walk you through it.

Care of the Soul: A Guide for Cultivating Depth and Sacredness in Everyday Life, by Thomas Moore

From Publishers Weekly

A radical and profoundly capacious view of human nature is the foundation for this eloquent discourse on living an imaginative, "soulful" life--one that embraces both body and spirit--in modern times. Challenging contemporary psychotherapy and its "muscled, strong-willed pursuit of change," Moore ( Dark Eros ), a therapist and religious historian who trained as a Catholic monk but did not make final vows, poses an attentive, accepting approach to everyday life that emphasises "modest care and not miraculous cure." Calling upon theories of C. G. Jung, Freud, Plato and such Renaissance thinkers as Marsilio Ficino and Paracelsus, the author reexamines Western archetypes and myths, citing Demeter and Persephone, Narcissus and Odysseus as well as Jesus for guidance in appreciating "the paradoxical mysteries that blend light and darkness into the grandeur of what human life and culture can be." Taking issue with current psychological precepts, beginning with the assumption that we have control over much of our lives and including our reverence for innocence and a belief in the triumph of the good, Moore urges that "we let the soul speak and show itself as it is, not as we wish it would be." His interpretations, particularly of myths, are not evenly persuasive, but all are well-considered and provocative. In graceful, deceptively gentle prose, he rejects formula, rigidity and a self-worth measured by accepted norms and thus upends contemporary spiritual and religious mores. The book is invigorating, demanding and revolutionary. 35,000 first printing; $50,000 ad/promo; author tour. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

This book was a wonderful surprise. I thought it would be a book of psychology, but it is full of examples of the gods of mythology and what they stood for, for example, the god Saturn ruling over depression. It talks about all sorts of feelings, and tells you what is good about all of them. Again for example, who would think depression is good? But it gives a person time to slow down, and see things in life they might not have known. I'm not explaining as well as the book, but I'm surprised of how interesting the book is, regarding all emotions, and what we can learn from the and do with them. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about themselves, other people, and just life in general.

This book is amazing. I actually had a few ah ha moments. I just love itIt is not the easiest book I have ever read, but that may be part of its beauty, several times I would read then re-read a passage, a chapter but I couldactually feel it hitting somewhere deep inside me, (not my brain) my heartand my soul

I want to look back on my deathbed knowing absolutely that I gave my soul every chance to become the Soul that God desired for it to become. A life of no regrets, full, and engaged at the deepest levels of my existence. Tho as has handed me the roadmap to that destination.

Spiritually, Philosopy and Psychology meet up in this book. It's been along since I've read it but anyone interested in soul development and understanding others in a "different place" should read it.

This soul-full book is the best I've read on the topic of living a more full and spiritual life. The content is profound but imminently accessible and provides eternal truths in such a way that it can help us connect with the Spirit in everyday life. I loved it.

Love this approach to therapy. If you believe in the soul it will help you understand a lot about yourself and others.

Thomas Moore opens the way to paying attention to soul in ways in which fed the longings of my soul. I will pay attention to those longings and nourish them rather than avoiding them as problems and shortcomings.

I love this little gem of a book based on Jungian psychology. Thomas Moore writes with feeling on many of the 21st century maladies, which if we'd just take the time to infuse into our daily lives we could be spared the pain of floundering around in the dark. There are a myriad of reasons that we experience the dark night of the soul, for soul growth, for cultivating soulfulness into our lives.
