Review
'A work of such importance that it should be compulsory reading at every level in the military; from the most recently enlisted cadet to the Chief of the Defence Staff and, even more important, the members of the National Security Council who guide him. ... War From the Ground Up deserves to be seen as a coda to Clausewitz's 'On War'. But it has the advantage of being considerably shorter.' --Michael Howard, Times Literary Supplement "One of the most important assertions in this fascinating book is that the outcome of wars is now less subject to assessment by body counts than to the verdict of civilian outsiders, who make judgments with scant heed to pure military logic. ... This is the first book by an immensely intelligent and interesting young man, from whom much will be heard. He lays down principles of policy-making and war fighting for instance, the key in counter-insurgency is to match actions and words so as to influence target audiences to subscribe to a given narrative with a wisdom lacking in most contemporary foreign offices. ... Ministers would do well to read Simpson's fascinating and provocative study before they launch their next lunge into the unknown. They might then better understand how elusive in modern conflict are the concepts of winning and losing."--Max Hastings, The Sunday Times"[A]n erudite and intelligent contribution to the literature on counterinsurgency." -- Lawrence D. Freedman, Foreign Affairs"War From the Ground Up should be read by all aspiring military commanders and their Whitehall masters."--The Guardian"Emile Simpson writes from experience as a frontline soldier who completed three tours in Afghanistan and as a visiting fellow at the University of Oxford. He combines academic rigour with practical perspective to explore the understanding and conceptualisation of modern war. [...] This important book [...] is an essential read for those interested in understanding both the conflict in Afghanistan and the contested and often confused nature of modern war." -- James Denselow, International Affairs"Filled with provocative and innovative observations about the blurring of military and political realms in kaleidoscopic environments, this book is the most perceptive account of contemporary conflict I have seen. It deserves to widely read by military practitioners and their political leaders."--Conrad Crane, lead author of FM 3-24, Counterinsurgency and Director of the U. S. Army Military History Institute"War from the Ground Up is an interesting and important meditation on the nature of the unsatisfying wars of the modern era by a man who has seen more of them than most, former Gurkha Rifle officer Emile Simpson. It should be read by everyone interested in the current war in Afghanistan and in the likely nature of conflict for many years to come; these wars are not going away, and Simpson has done yeoman s work in helping us understand them."--John Nagl, Minerva Professor of Culture and War, U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis"A bold exploration of strategic thought, well grounded in experience. It is what one would expect of a Gurkha officer, following in the footsteps of Bill Slim, the thinking man's general." -- Carter Malkasian, Afghanistan veteran with the US State Department and author of War Comes to Garmser: Thirty Years of Conflict on the Afghan Frontier"Emile Simpson engages with a key problem in our understanding of conflict - the binary fallacy that sees war as essentially two-sided and as a precursor to political outcomes, rather than as a multi-player political ecosystem with its own logic. Simpson's analysis of the conflict in Afghanistan should be required reading for all students and practitioners of modern war." -- David Kilcullen, author of The Accidental Guerrilla: Fighting Small Wars in the Midst of a Big One"I am constantly bowled over by Emile Simpson's insights. He produces lines that exude common sense and which, because they are pithy, deserve to be widely quoted and will be. Put simply, this is the most intelligent book on war that I have read for a very long time."--Hew Strachan, Oxford University"How to do and how not to do counter-insurgency, by an expert and exceptionally thoughtful practitioner. Hard analysis, and happy talk-free. Essential reading for anyone seriously interested in what makes success in counter-insurgency so elusive."--Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles, author of Cables from Kabul: The Inside Story of the West's Afghanistan Campaign"A work of such importance that it should be compulsory reading at every level in the military; from the most recently enlisted cadet to the Chief of the Defence Staff and, even more important, the members of the National Security Council . . . It is impossible to summarize Emile Simpson's ideas without distorting them. His own style is so muscular and aphoristic that he can concentrate complex arguments into memorable sentences that will have a life of their own. His familiarity with the work of Aristotle and the history of the English Reformation enables him to explain the requirements of a strategic narrative as effectively as his experiences in Afghanistan illuminate his understanding of the relationship between operational requirements and political objectives. In short (and here I shall really go overboard) --deserves to be seen as a coda to Clausewitz's On War. But it has the advantage of being considerably shorter."--Michael Howard, Times Literary Supplement"One of the most important assertions in this fascinating book is that the outcome of wars is now less subject to assessment by body counts than to the verdict of civilian outsiders, who make judgments with scant heed to pure military logic. ... I was intrigued by the review in the Financial Times, which was very positive. The book is derived from, I believe some academic work of the author, and as such is a tad dry in the telling, however his basic points are well considered (if repeated a little too often), and the logic used is compelling and credible. If you wonder how in the 21st and further centuries a viable military will confront the multitude of threats and missions then this book provides some well considered and clear insights as to the scale and scope of kinetic force and potential applications, limitations and constraints. I would suggest reading "The utility of Force" by Gen Rupert Smith and "The accidental Guerrilla" by David Kilcullen in combination with this book, as between the three there this considerable wisdom as to how western democracies may engage with those that are determined to use violence, often associated with their belief systems, as their chosen methods in the eternal struggle for earthly power.
The subject is complex but the writing is lucid and compelling. Simpson argues for a place for counterinsurgency in the west’s quiver but is dubious about employing it as a one-size-fits-all global strategic posture. As he demonstrates with historical examples and personal experience, the local politics and contextual factors are too arcane and the perceptions too likely to be skewed by misunderstandings and counter-narratives. He likens war in the ungoverned spaces to armed domestic politics where western forces are merely another partisan factor to add into the balance. He simultaneously rejects those who would dismiss counterinsurgency as a strategic distraction as well as those who believe it can be distilled into a handful of doctrinal bromides and readily applied to any situation. Whether western policymakers and military leaders can find an effective way to operate between these two extremes is an open question. Simpson seems to think we can, but his case for this is not strong. For example, he places much emphasis on the power of narrative and perception, but rarely discusses it from a domestic point of view. Moreover, how hard it is to please one group let alone multiple groups. Nevertheless, this is highly recommended not only as a good primer on Clausewitz and strategic theory, but also as a fairly effective counter-argument to those such as Gian Gentile who would categorically cede low intensity conflict to our adversaries.
I was initially intrigued by the title and the review made by readers. The complete logic of the book is convincing and credible and moreover has an outstanding background of information based on personal experience as Platoon Cdr in Helmand's Province in Afghanistan and Academic’s perspective. The book provides a complete insightful research about how to make effective Strategy in Contemporary Conflicts under the Clausewitz Trinity’s perspective emphasizing counterinsurgency is a tool for Operational level that need to be adapted with pragmatic approach to the particular situation and not as a template one. The best part of the book came with his personal experience in Afghanistan, Ch 2 (Clausewitz and Contemporary Conflict); Ch 7 (British Strategy in Borneo) and the conclusions. If your are interested in contemporary nature of the conflicts for years to come; I suggest (as other readers recommend) “The utility of Force" by Gen Rupert Smith with this book.I believe this book is indispensable read for those interested in understanding both the conflict in Afghanistan and the confused nature of modern war.
Simpson's take on this topic is important and he makes good points. For strategy to be effective, it has to be connected to the truth on the ground. This problem is not unique to war, nor is it unique to the 21st Century. The writing is highly academic and theoretical in places, but in other places where he describes Afghan combat or situations, it is much clearer. His personal stories of Helmand and leading the Gurkas are interesting and carry the points along. For those familiar with Clausewitz's thinking, the book is a good application of Clausewitz's thinking, and better than you will see in many books. Recommended for anyone wanting to know more about the connection of political goals via military means.
Mr Simpson takes a hard look, from all directions on War. It's scope, and effect on those involved. Delving deeper in the relationship between our Policy and Politics and the tool that is the Army.Excellent read for any student of armed conflict, and especially Afghanistan.I have spent several years in Afghanistan, and this book helped pull into focus so much of what goes on here.Highly recommended.
Although Emile Simpson's work is sprawling in its scope and thus often disorganized, it is, nonetheless, absolutely brilliant. As a young officer it has highly influenced my thoughts on warfare and the nature of political violence in the contemporary world. I have and will continue to recommend it to anyone and everyone in the profession of arms!
Simpson hides his observations behind overly affected academic language and syntax. It is not a casual read. Also, the kindle page numbers do not match the print page numbers making it very difficult to use for book discussions.
Fascinating insight from an original thinker of great potential. Mixes contemporary conflict insights, with bold theoretical work and unique historical case study on Borneo. Not surprising that its getting lots of notice.
