About the Author

LAUREL THATCHER ULRICH was born in Sugar City, Idaho. She holds degrees from the University of New Hampshire, University of Utah, and Simmons College. She is 300th Anniversary University Professor at Harvard University and past president of the American Historical Association. As a MacArthur Fellow, Ulrich worked on the PBS documentary based on her Pulitzer Prize-winning book A Midwife's Tale. Her work is also featured on an award-winning website called dohistory.org. She is immediate past president of the Mormon History Association. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

This is a very in depth, fully researched book the title of which might seem a bit misleading.Why?Because the author coined a phrase in the 1970s that since has been seen (often with "rarely" in place of "seldom") on T-shirts and bumper sticker and slogans just about everywhere.The author addresses this in great detail in a very long preface which, in an of itself, could be the basis for a college course.The book examines the lives of three very distinct women from three very distinct centuries and eras, yet discovers commonalities amongst the three and explores them.This is not a easy sit down and read book, yet the material flows smoothly. She can be a bit long-winded at times, yet her insight can takes away one's breath.This is an excellent resource for all people wanting to explore humanity, as well as a specific side of our species :-)

I am thoroughly enjoying reading this interesting book, especially all the various ways in which this motto can be interpreted...Best of all is achieving our goals, and daring to try, even in often uncharted waters!

Great read. It reinforced my belief in women AND history. I am a midwife, dedicated to women and their transitions in life , such as motherhood, grandmother hood, and the journey from maiden to mother to matriarch to crone. I learned much. And it reinforced my beliefs and knowledge.

Laurel Thatcher Ulrich writes wonderful women's history books. Have learned a lot from her.

This is a great book! I really like this author and her perspective. I gave this book to a high school senior going through some difficult personal situations in her life. She enjoyed the stories about the challenges these women faced and what they did to address the issues. She felt inspired. I would recommend this to everyone.

This never felt like a high school history book but I think it SHOULD be one! I loved it and have recommended it to many women. It jumps across time, across cultures and across disciplines but isn't choppy. It steadily frames just how amazing the history of womenkind is.

The best feature of this book is the wide range of relatively unknown women whose stories are told. The book is very well researched, with vivid storytelling. A must read -- even a textbook -- as an introduction to women's studies at the college level.

I recently purchased this book before actually attending the temple and obtaining an official copy. There are numerous mispellings, the print is very faint and on some pages slightly shifted. As I reached towards the end it there were pages missing and the chapters were not numbered. Overall very disappointed in the presentation of this copy but enlightened overall by the words of the prophet. I even tried contacting the seller because this version is very unprofessional. I recommend obtaining an official copy.Update: I am writing this as an update only because I had a chance to get an official copy but this printed copy still sucks. While I can not say that I am an expert on the Sciences I found that he created a work which was compiled for the people to help them in their struggle. What is the bible but a compilation of great works are you going to say that has been plagiarized? All prophets do one thing which is to deliver a message for their people in their times for their understanding. Having read the Aquarian gospel and other great works you begin to see many similarities. I am writing this only because I thought the same thing as the other commenter that he plagiarized the Koran but as you begin to read and open your mind you realize that he is on to something and if you put aside biases and take a look at our current state regardless of skin color you will understand the lessons that can change your life. If you are interested get a copy just not this one.

Genius. This translation of Attars classic book, "The Conference of the Birds," by Sholeh Wolpé is beautiful. The images and meditations are heart wrenching and poignant. Thank you, Sholeh Wolpé for translating a version of Attar's classic work that is as intelligent as it is beautiful, and that flows from the page as if it were written solely for the English reader. This book, as good as it is, leaves me in a state of awe, wondering how gorgeous the version written in Farsi must be, yet overwhelmingly content with the version that I have just read. Thank you for taking on this project and making it one of the best translations I've ever read. And thank you for shining a spotlight on the Iranian literary tradition, something that is especially important right now.

I was so happy to see this translation. I teach world literature, and the earlier translation is practically unreadable. My students loved this version, especially because the parables are in prose, which lends to the readability. Certainly we talk about the format of the original format of the couplets, but in this translation, the students are able to connect with the content and the themes in a more practical way, especially for an undergraduate survey course. And just from the standpoint of a general interest reader, this translation has finally made Attar accessible, relevant, and enjoyable. It's a great book, and I highly recommend it.

The Conference of the Birds is an epic poem of 93 pages, written in 1177 by the Persian poet Attar of Nishapur. A group of birds wants to appoint a leader. The hoopoe, the wisest of them all, says that they should find Simurgh to be their leader, but, she says, the road is long and the sea is deep on the way to Mount Qaf.Throughout the story, the birds receive much advice. The wise Sufi advises to ‘make sure then that the bird of ambition aquires wings of aspiration, and give to your heart and reason the ecstasy of the soul.’ Others give advice too – the Muslim warrior, the Christian crusader, the Indian Rajah, the astrologer, and a holy fool.Of the thousands of birds who set out on the journey, how many reach the end ‘with neither feathers nor wings’ on the way to the heights of immortality? This age-old allegorical tale has everything from the spiritual to the earthly, and from humour to tragedy, but especially, it has the wisdom of the ages. It’s a glorious story.
