This book is a unique war memoir in that it describes the actions of the intelligence arm of the French Military. This tale tells how the French military destroyed the Moslem insurgency in the city of Algiers using torture, summary executions, and other dirty means.It is written by a veteran of the conflict and it is matter-of-fact about the terrible nature of this ugly war.While being somewhat disturbing, it implies that the rough methods of torture were effective. Since its publishing it seems that the techno-thriller genre has come to portray torture as a good idea-a bad development in this darkening world.The book also shows the culture and life of War Era French Algeria.

What a great book! General Aussaresses lets all the skeletons out of the closet. Too often we talk about wars and the way they should be fought. Aussaresses tells you the way a guerilla war is REALLY fought. It is the people caught in the middle who suffer. What is really scary is that his logic does make some sense. Traditional justice systems are not designed to deal with large scale distrubances. They are designed to deal with crimes commited by individuals or small groups of individuals. In a sense, terrorists are equated with serial killers and the question the reader is left with is Can we afford to make a mistake and let them go free because they will kill innocents again. This book made me glad that I never have to make these types of decisions.

I believe many of those who wrote reviews of this book are writing from their hearts as opposed to cooly assessing this excellent work. Afterall, it is hard for one to embrace the author's premise that physical torture and summary executions were the only way to effectively deal with Algerian insurgents.Although one may not want to accept this methodology, many influential members in French military and political circles accepted this as the price to pay to keep Algeria French. Because these senior leaders were able to get men like Paul Aussaresses to do their dirty work for them does not make their hands any cleaner. Aussaresses obviously could not have done what he did for so long without the approval of his chain of command.I commend the author for having the moral courage to admit his own actions when everyone else involved has taken the different approach of sweeping it under the rug. Admitting to crimes against humanity is nothing to be proud of, but Aussaresses was certainly the implementer of French political will just as Adolf Eichmann was for Germany.This is an important work for understanding to what extent nations will go to, to secure their empires. It is also important for understanding counterinsurgency and the limits of violence. Whatever your political/moral take on the author, this is an interesting, unique book and well worth the time spent reading it.

The author was instrumental in waging France's campaign against terrorism in Algeria. This battle was the last gasp of the French Colonial Empire, following their withdrawal from French Indo China in 1954. In 1952 a group of Egyptian officers led by Col. Nasser overthrew King Farouk. Nasser's ambition was to encourage, support and fund Arab nationalism in the region. He provided weapons and funds to the Algerian FLN which had been founded in October 1954. The FLN attacks against civilians began within a week. The FLN objective was to get rid of the French settlers, French army and kill those Algerians who worked with the French whom they called collaborators. This war was probably the first where terrorist bombings were used on a large scale against the civilian population. Horrific atrocities were committed as well. In fact the French military defeated the FLN by mid 1957. But, like the U.S. experiences in Vietnam and Iraq, French public opinion influenced by the media opposed the war. And ultimately they withdrew in 1962. This book reads like a fast paced novel. The pages turn quickly. It is a valuable historical read.

I have read all of the McRyan mysteries and have loved all of them except this one. I pre-bought it and eagerly waited 3 months for it to be published. With all the other McRyan mysteries, I could not put them down....staying up way past normal bedtime and sometimes being late for work because I wanted to finish a chapter. With this book I have literally had to make myself read it because it is not in my nature to give up, but it has taken me 6 weeks and I am at 88%. The book has simply been boring with lots of description about road names, highway directions, neighborhoods, the connection between different towns, etc. Simply filled the book with meaningless details. I do not know why Roger Steljas deviated from prior McRyan mysteries by making others the prime characters in the book. They are 'McRyan' mysteries and I expect him to be the star all the way through which wasn't the case this time. I hope that Roger will move McRyan back to Minneapolis and make him the prime character in the next book.

Another great read by Stelljes. Spoiler alert.This one starts with a boat on the Mississippi River. The reason its there is to get rid of a body. A guy named Luther Ellis. An Ellis an ex cop named Shead has been looking for. The body is in a canvas bag with weights to take it to the bottom. Luther had been tortured for info and now was headed to his last resting place.Sam Shead had been a detective for the St. Paul PD. He's was Lich's partner. A guy who lost his job when alcohol came into the picture. He was booted out of the PD and it wasn't till he hit rock bottom that he turned his life around.He had been looking for Ellis, a guy who just disappeared. Shead was a very good detective and started following people who knew Ellis. One of them was Neil Kline, a guy who Ellis had been in prison with. This led Shead to a farmhouse outside St. Paul. It was there he saw people arriving and recognized them. He took pictures and knew he now had something for Lich to use. A Lich who had investigated Ellis's disappearance as a favor to Shead but got nowhere.Little did Sam know he would be kidnapped, tortured and murdered.Mac MacRyan is back in twin cities visiting his old friends and colleagues. Sally is with the President on a tour and Mac won't be seeing her for a while. He's glad to be back homel with friends and colleagues. Little does he know what a mess he will be landing in.So begins one damned fine read.This one has Mac, Lich, Shead, Shead's girlfriend Nikki, Nikki's employees, Rocky, Riles, Ortega, Fisher, a Fisher who is more than he appears to be, Flannagan the Chief, Frank, death, drug cartels, White, Helena and Mac MacRyan in the case of his life.Five Stars.

Before you start this book, please realize it is the eighth one of a series. While it could be read as a standalone, I would recommend you start with the first title in order to understand all of the back story of the main characters.The author does his usual nice job of getting you into the story, making you feel as if you are right in the middle of the action and it is another page turner. There are some new twists and scenarios in comparison to his other titles and it was enjoyable. I picked this up for $3.99 on my Kindle and certainly received more than $3.99 worth of entertainment value out of it: if you enjoyed the previous novels in this series I am confident you will like this one, also.

Each McRyan book just gets better and better. Crime fiction has never been my favorite genre, but I have been thoroughly engrossed in the Mac McRyan series. These books have had me on the edge of my seat, I can't read fast enough and the tiniest details make these books a movie in my mind. He writes in such a way that it's like I'm there. I can visualize each scene perfectly in my mind and the dialogue is so realistic I wonder if he was ever a cop - or at the very least, has hung around with cops. I like that Mac works outside the box - and he does more in this book than any of the others. I think that's one of the things that makes these books so realistic - Mac is human. He does whatever he has to do to solve the crimes he's involved with, even it means going outside the law. Roger Stelljes has done an outstanding job with this series and I hope Fireball will not be the last.

Woo hoo- what a roller coaster ride. This books hits lots of relevant issues from police shooting of unarmed citizens to Mexican drug cartels yet still highlighting the camaraderie and cooperation that exists among law enforcement agencies. the final chapters will leave you gasping for air. The author must have an engineering degree to be able to strategically move and place the myriad characters involved.We get to see a little different side of McRyan for reasons I’ll let the reader see for himself.I had assumed this book would pick up where the previous one left off. But that is not the case. So I assume we can look forward to that in future books.I’m not sure why Fireball was chosen for the title, however. I understand it’s role in the plot but it does not warrant title recognition, in my opinion.If you’re a fan of fast paced, cleverly constructed police procedural with compelling characters, don’t miss this book. I loved every minute of it.

Mac McRyan is one of my favorite characters in a series. And the author has done a great job of growing the characters in his books. For this story encompasses numerous characters, from each ot their points of view, yet was done seamlessly, and in an entertaining way. You had some humor, murder, mystery, violence, more murder, more violence, and a story that seems built around current events. And as Mac uncovers the once hidden figures behind events, we have a twist or two. All in all we have a great, engrossing story, that takes Mac McRyan outside the lines a bit. Because the cartels don't play within the rules. To catch them, you may have to color outside the lines. Satisfying. A great read from an author that is in the zone.

The purpose of writing this book is to integrate information from the fields of biochemistry, immunology, genetics, nutrition, and microbiology about autism, ADD, and PDD into a form that could be assimilated by both parents, professionals such as nutritionists and dietitians, and physicians who deal with children with these disorders. Long conversations with hundreds of parents of children with autism and PDD, including many who are themselves physicians, have provided me with many clues to these disorders. The wealth of information on the abnormalities of the immune system in autism leads me to the conclusion that the genetic factors in autism appear to be primarily those affecting the immune system. In my view, the anatomical abnormalities in the brain that have been documented may be secondary to abnormal metabolic function caused by abnormal microbial metabolites and/or toxic peptides from wheat and milk, which in turn are due to an impaired immune system. The information in this book may be useful not only for people with autism but also for children with any disorder in which some of the symptoms of autism are sometimes or frequently present including pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), Rett's syndrome, Williams disease, neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis, Fragile X, Down's syndrome, Tourette's syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, and attention deficit disorder(ADD). Many of the same abnormalities in autism are also present in these disorders and the therapies suggested in this book for autism may also help children and adults with these other disorders as well. My objectives are to describe the abnormalities in autism and related disorders and to describe some of the therapies that are frequently beneficial for children and adults who have some or all of the symptoms of autism. Although a few children have completely recovered from autism using the therapies outlined in this book (and the parents of two of them include their accounts in this book), I am not suggesting that all children will benefit but hope that many will benefit to some degree. I think that the accounts of the two mothers whose children recovered are very important because of the similarities of the therapies they used. Both mothers obtained information and instituted therapy independently. Both children were diagnosed early about the age of two years. Both mothers independently arrived at the use of antifungal therapy, an antiyeast diet low in sugar and free of yeast, treatment of food allergies, and a gluten and casein-free diet as key cornerstones of therapy but also used intensive behavioral interventions as well. You will note that there are significant differences in the nutritional and antifungal approaches presented by different authors in this book. I realize that this may be confusing but this information honestly reflects the fact that there are still many unknowns. You may wish to experiment with several of the different nutritional and antifungal approaches to determine which ones are most beneficial for your patient or your child. Some of this material may be difficult but I have made every attempt to simplify it without distorting the meaning. Knowledge is power. Much of this information may not be familiar to parents or to medical practitioners. The parent who reads this book should assume that their family doctor or even their neurologist or other specialist may not know nearly as much as they do about autism after reading this book. Most of the information has been available in the form of research papers that have been available only to medical research specialists but was essentially unknown by persons outside the narrow specialty. There has been a tremendous increase in the application of knowledge about autism and PDD that was stimulated by a group of physicians and scientists who met in Dallas in January 1995 as a part of Dr. Bernard Rimland's Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) Conference. My goal for this book is to allow your child to be healthier and function better so that both you and your child will have a better life. I am sure to be criticized for recommending action based on "incomplete" or "anecdotal" data. While acknowledging the great benefits of antibiotics in treating disease, I think the overuse of antibiotics may have been the single most damaging medical treatment of the last half of this century for some of our children. However, I think the dangers to our children are too great to wait until all data are perfect, meaning that we should wait forever. The Red Cross refused to act on behalf of the Jews in German concentration camps in World War II despite numerous reports of genocide because the evidence was "anecdotal" rather than "definitive." It has taken nearly 50 years from the time of the first research linking lung cancer and smoking to get restrictions on cigarette use for minors. Wow, I really got slammed by people who gave this book five stars. Just for the record, I also have devoted 100% of my life, time and attention to my son because I too have the financial means and desire to do so. My point in my original review was that this book was too confusing and there is contradictory information. I have studied very much on the subject and there's no doubt that some of the theories are correct. For example, I agree with the vaccine problem issue. But in our case, the antibiotic issue doesn't hold water because he's never used antibiotics except for a couple of times. Also, some of the treatments are good, but there are better books out there which explain this in a less confusing and frightening manner. Also, the author DOES try to get you to send all blood tests to his lab. :)

Autism is very complicated and not well understood. Dr. Shaw is a living legend! Here he tries to consider different possibilities. He includes information from different parents, medical analysis, lab work, theories, etc. Read it and learn! Fight for your child!

I too found this book, touted as a bible in dietary intervention circles, to contain a lot of conflicting information. The author/editor claims yeast is at the bottom of it all. Some contributors found a diet to limit yeast to be more severe than required, and stuck to casein and gluten free. The reader is told that their child may improve immediately, in a few days, in a few months, or not for a year. If symptoms recur, it could be due to a newly developed food sensitivity. It seems more likely to me that improvements/regressions are not due to the diet at all. Also, it troubles me that this scientist's work is not being replicated consistently, and that tests must be performed in his lab to ensure a "valid" result. Finally, the allegation that immunizations "cause" autism has recently been refuted through statistically significant studies. Well, I guess this is autism at the millenium. Maybe we don't believe anymore that mothers cause autism with the emotional diet they offer their children. Now, some will have us believe that the very nourishment we give our children causes this heartbreaking disability. I don't buy it.

This is one of the most comprehensive, up-to-date research available to parents/guardians of autistic individuals. This book gives critical information on treatments that ARE effective in helping individuals diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder. Also, parents of children diagnosed with ADD ADHD and learning disabilities will benefit. THERE ARE TREATMENTS FOR AUTISM. Wonderful book which includes parent testimonials.
