The Eons Lost Orphan is an entertaining but highly improbable story of Jane Doe. Appearing to be around 14, Jane is found lying nude in a park in Pasadena, CA one morning, as if she had fallen from the sky. Which, in fact, she had.Jane, who is extremely intelligent and possessing special 'skills', is eventually adopted by a highly intelligent couple (who else) who sees to her needs so she can flourish.Later, as a USAF Cadet, she enjoys several adventures putting her amazing skills to use. Needless to say, Jane becomes a star within the Air Force. Her inventions bring he fame and fortune. All good and tidy. Many reviewers have likened this book to the Ell Donsai series by Lawrence Dahners. In my view, Mr. Dahners books are far and away better than Eons Lost Orphan. The author makes a lot more than a few easily researched errors. The USAF base at Las Vegas is 'Nellis Air Force base', not Ellis AFB. The housing for transient officers on any US Military base is called the 'TOQ' not the OTQ. Gun silencers do NOT silence a gun when fired, they just greatly reduce the sharp report. Also, "silencers" work best on pistols, not revolvers as the author states. These are a few of the many obvious errors in nomenclature. Spelling, grammar and sentence structure errors abound in this book. You shouldn't write books for public consumption if you don't have these basics down pat. Learn the differences between 'to, too and two' and their correct usages. The first few chapters are stilted and demonstrate the author's adage, 'show, don't tell'. The author does get better as the book progresses. In the final chapter, Jane's physical prowess comes into play with her confrontation with kidnappers. For me, this was the best part of this book, which is totally lacking in action. Scenes like this should have been distributed throughout this story. For the above reasons, I gave this book three stars. It WAS entertaining but with little effort on the author's part, it could have been so much better, so more readable.
Loved this book wish the second book was out. Great start to a new series that is a fun read for anyone that just wants a good book to read. I bought this book after reading the Wright up. on it the only thing that I didn't love about this book was the cover. I had passed up this book as I'm like a lot of people and do a lot of buying on cover art and I over looked this book at first because of the cover ( never judge a book by the cover). As I said this is a great book and I injoyed reading it as I am sure you will too.
Through a simple writing style, Laer Carroll tells a lovely fantasy of a cyborg(?) girl arriving on earth through mysterious circumstances. "Jane" goes to the Air Force Academy and we learn why the upper classes harass the incoming cadets. (I never knew why!) Jane has amazing abilities in Math and Physics, not unlike a friend of mine who, as a grad student at Texas A&M, used to help the science faculty when they'd get stuck on problems. So much more realistic than you might think. This is a very sweet, enjoyable story and I am hoping the author continues Jane's adventures.
It has NO plot. I read the entire book, fully expecting something to happen. It never did. There are no emotional highs and lows -- no significant incidents or events. The book is just blah. There is some superficial resemblance to series about exceptional young women such as Laurence Dahners' Elle Donsai, Richard F. Weyand's Childers, and Mackey Chandler's April but only because the heroine is presented as an over-achiever.The title character is a alien cyborg (resembling a human girl in her young teens) who has fallen to earth. The story follows her life through adoption, high school, and the Air Force Academy. This alien is superior in every way: a genius in science, engineering, and math; an acclaimed musical composer; an outstanding athlete who also dances salsa and tango; everyone's best friend and worst enemy. She teaches graduate math at Caltech at age 17 and achieves her combat air qualification in one week!It reads as if the author is world-building for a series. If so, I certainly will not be interested in a second book.
If you like the Eli Donsaii books, you may enjoy this one. It describes the adventure of Jane Doe, from when she is discovered abandoned in a park around age 14 to her graduating from the Air Force Academy. She is a tremendously overpowered character, and a weakness in the book is that there is very little tension. Whatever she tries, she is vastly better than any human attempting to develop the same skill. People love her and birds sing to her when she walks by. (Ok I made up that part. Perhaps in the sequel?) There is also not much character development, because when you are already perfect, why should you change? Character development is for wimpy heroes. The plot follows the first few Donsaii books almost exactly. Jane shows less angst and uncertainty than Eli in similar situations. One change of which I approve was to make Jane Doe a human-like alien rather than an exceptional human. Eli Donsaii is so far off the human curve as to be silly. Jane, certainly Eli's equal, is not on the human curve at all.I had a pleasant day or two reading the book. I probably will not bother with the sequel.
I finished this book wanting more! The characters are well defined and REAL! The plot is realistic although the tale starts to drag just a little. I don’t see how the author could avoid it as he takes his characters realistically through four years. I look forward to books 2,3, and hopefully 4.I want to know the further adventures of JANE. I love the plot and the real world political events which start to form support for the plot in the last chapter. One spoiler....the author has nicely crafted a cliffhanger!!!Please Mr Carroll get to writing book #2!!!
