This is a great book for anyone. I play trombone, guitar and bass so I have a musical background and know how to read notation which allowed me to skip one of the first chapters, but my girlfriend who has no musical knowledge read it and understood in less than 5 minuets. All of the information is presented in a great order and there is tons of info about not only playing drums but also how to join a band, what to expect at a gig, diffrent types of cymbals and countless others. It got me playing profeciently in less than six months with lots of practice. I reccomend this for anyone intrested in playing.

I'm a professional guitarist, with over 40 years on the neck. I've always dabbled in drums, and this year bought a small set and finally decided to get serious. I work in a music store, so I have access to every book around, as well as knowing and playing with some great drummers, who have been really helpful.This book was recommended by a fellow teacher, and it has been a great intro into equipment, maintenance, important drummers, all the basic beats in rock, jazz, blues, funk, etc, as well as some great song transcriptions of Aerosmith, Deep Purple, etc. The section on rudiments and fills are a bit thin, but there's plenty of books available for that. I found the info on equipment and maintenance to be very helpful, and not found in too many other books. There's even a section on gig etiquette!If you're an advanced player, there's probably nothing new here. But if you're new to drums, and looking for a good overview of every facet, you can't go wrong here. Fun to read as well.

I bought the Idiot's Guide: Playing Drums before this. And it was good, but long winded, somewhat formal and not very engaging, in my opinion. But this book blows it out of the water! It covers in 20 pages what the Idiot's Guide did in about 50 (albeit on larger pages; the paper is bigger to fit scores). But even more important is the tone of the author. It feels like I'm having a conversation with him as he teaches me, not like I'm reading an instructional book.The big problem with self-teaching is motivation and sticking to it. And I haven't had that problem with this book. I read it on the train ride home everyday and can't wait to try out what I learned when I see my drums.All in all, a good book, especially for those people with some musical experience.

This is the second book in Lorraine Heath's Texas Trilogy. Dallas Leigh it still in want of a wife to give him a son. He discovers that the McQueen family has a daughter, Cordelia. The McQueens have been feuding with Dallas over land boundaries and water rights, and Dallas is hopeful that by marrying Cordelia McQueen he can solve the problems of needing an heir, and his land issues with her family. Cordelia McQueen has basically been captive in her home by her father and brothers, but she agrees to marry Dallas Leigh. This marriage gives both Dallas and Cordelia more than they dreamed. They both discover they are more than they recognize in themselves. It's lovely and emotional to watch Dallas open his heart to love, and Cordelia open her life to fully living. There are many family dramas to watch unfold in this beautiful story too. It's emotional and exceptionally well written, just as her readers know to expect from Lorraine Heath.

If it wasn't for Texas Destiny, I probably wouldn't have even looked at this book. Being exposed to Dallas in the previous book allowed me to better understand his gruff attitude. He admits that he's a hard man to love and that's true, but he's also patient, kind, and fair.He decides to marry his rivals daughter, Cordelia ("Dee") to end tensions and finally have his son. Dee is extremely timid and fearful when she first comes to Dallas' home but soon realizes her new husband isn't as evil as her family made him out to be.Dallas soon realizes how much he cares for Dee, but being the man he is he doesn't know how to show her. He regrets forcing her to marry him and tries to make up for it.This book has some fairly dark moments. It's also pretty emotionally depressing in some moments. While there is a happy ending, it was hard fought. This isn't a happy go-lucky read and readers should prepare themselves. But it's a great read that keeps you turning pages.A secondary character, a small boy named Rawley, stole the show whenever he was out and I really hope Heath gives him his own book one day. I felt so bad for the life he had to endure....Houston also has his fair share of moments, and so does Austin. Which brings me to the ending...*Spoilers*I had a hard time believing Austin would sacrifice five years of his life in prison for a crime he didn't commit in order to protect the reputation of a girl. I also have an extremely hard time believing that said girl would keep her silence for five years and not come forward to save him. I also have a harder time believing his brothers would do NOTHING. This, obviously, plays a key role in Austin's book and it makes it harder for me to even want to read it because of of this flaw.

I liked the story, but there was both good and bad things in the book. The first part of the story I had a little bit of a hard time with. I do not care for women who are basically afraid of their shadow, and that was what Cordelia (Dee) was for approximately the first half of the book. About 70% into the book it becomes really sad, and like the first book, you may shed a tear or two. As far as the intimate scenes go there were more than the first book, but she does not write them very well. To me they often seem awkward and quick. Since I still basically like the story I gave it 4 stars still. So if you like a good story, the two books I have read from her were great and somewhat of a tear jerker. However if you like more sizzle they definitely do not have that.

Wow! I really loved this book. Dallas was amazing. I remember thinking after I finished the first book that I wouldn't like Dallas because of everything that happened with Houston and Amelia but I ended up loving this book even more then the first.Dallas was a strong man who knew what he wanted. The fact that is bride turned out to be a wolf in sheep's clothing was perfect. Dee was such a timid and sheltered girl due to her family but once she gained her freedom things started to change.I loved the relationship development in this book. They suffered from some series communication problems but things worked out in the end. I wish we could have gotten to see Rawley more though!The lead in to the next book was great too!

Have to admit, I really, really liked this book. Dallas and Dee were complete strangers when they married. Luckily things turned better when they took the time to get to know each other before sleeping together.

I read this entire series and hope she will continue the series. It was a wonderful love story and it made me fill like they were part of my family.

It's not very often that I will read something twice, but this story was very moving and I loved it!

I love the art and I love the overall story. However, the writing is rough. Saying that going after drug dealers is "racist" is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. So is the writer implying only certain races are drug dealers? There's too many forced political "messages" similar to the hurting drug dealers is racist" line of thinking that really hurt this. On top of that, dialogue sometimes comes off as an elementary kid who learned some swear words and decides to use them on the playground at school to look cool.I like the idea and the art enough to see this through, and who knows? Maybe the character is an idiot and not the writer. If so, that's fine. It can be hard to tell the difference.

Finally found what I'm looking for in a comic. The way this story is written makes you feel like it could actually happen (provided demons were real). Brubaker is really good at placing you in the head of the main character. I would recommend this to anyone who is into dark, gritty fantasies set in the modern world. The plot reminds me of the anime Deathnote, but with a more personal, noir flavor.

A dark, but intriguing story. I love the way its told. Like some guy you bumped into on a dark night, just starts laying out his grisly tale, almost rambling, but still managing to unfold a not quite believable tale. The way the narrator is inside his own head, constantly questioning himself, then slowly becoming comfortable with his newfound world he's struggling to navigate. I was immediately hooked. Absolutely love the artwork, the dark tones with bright pieces that draw the eye. Both the art and the story are excellent. I couldn't put it down. Read through it, then immediately ordered the second and third volumes. BUY IT!!

This graphic novel is unbelievable. Truly unbelievable. It is so good. I can't wait until volume 2. This protagonist is so compelling and sympathetic. My mind was blown in the middle of the volume. It was direct, disheartening but oh so real. Image comics have out done themselves and that isnafter reading Saga which is virtually a cartooned masterpiece.

Dylan's mundane-ness is so relatable. He's a grad student who's depressed because life sucks. Like it does for all of us. We yearn to have meaning and purpose and for everything to make sense but life is just a bunch of humans trying to figure things out. This book and this perspective feels so... Real. It's probably a cop-out to use that word but the descriptions of how he feels and how the world is is incredibly sharp.

The character is interesting, even if not sympathetic. I believe other reviewers have mentioned Catcher in the Rye and Deathnote. Less Deathnote and more Catcher, at least in this first volume. I won't rehash the plot, but I will touch briefly on the politics of the protagonist, since that too was mentioned by some reviewers (apparently causing lower review scores than otherwise would have been the case).The protagonist does have some leftist politics, and that is made quite clear in this volume. However, I didn't particularly take it as "preachy" as at least one other reviewer did. To the contrary, it almost seems like we're supposed to frown on the rather simplistic view Dylan has on the world. He's obviously well-educated, but in the way every college liberal arts major is. He knows how to view things through the prism he's been taught. He can reference major literary works and has a grasp on their themes, but it's an uppity sort of intelligence, which is why it hearkens back to Holden Caulfield.Like Caulfield, you get the sense that Dylan looks down on the world. Not only the world, but himself as well. He has enough self-awareness to be a nihilist, but doesn't seem able to push himself beyond it. He's a sad character, without being a sympathetic one. This makes him realistic to me, though tragic.Perhaps Brubaker meant to slam his own political ideology into readers through this work, but it's not the sense I get (I have no knowledge of Brubaker's political leanings). Rather, the political aspects of the narration deepen the character by making him much more realistic than he otherwise would be. He comes across quite genuinely as a young man in college just learning what it means to be a man. He knows a lot without knowing how to apply it, so we get anger and despair. We see a man struggling to understand the world and, when you learn his family history, and that of his "girlfriend," it's not hard to see why he is the way he is.Dylan isn't the liberal champion of the downtrodden like we see with Green Arrow. He's not meant to be a moral pillar on which we hang our hopes, and therefor his politics carry no weight. He lacks any of the rhetorical devices (such as pathos or logos) by which an audience would respect him enough to listen. To the contrary, he's not a respectable character. He's a tragic one, and he's incredibly well developed because of it.I don't know whether Brubaker means for us to like Dylan. I feel sorry for him, but he's not the sort of guy I see most people wanting to be around. He's depressing, snooty, selfish, preachy, and all too realistic. He is human, all too human.

I was not expecting this to go where it did! A hilarious, dark, and sympathizing look at a vigilante and the consequences of it.

I don't get it at all. I was expecting some sort of action adventure not a graphic story. It may be great for those fans of the genre but for me I had a hard time with the entire concept.

This book is really difficult to understand on the first attempt. My husband and i went through many other tutorials before starting to read this one. Actually we tried learning hadoop starting from simple hadoop wiki page, wiki.apache.org, hadoop.apache.org, yahoo materials, documents from authors like Jimmy Lin and Chris Dyer , free you tube tutorials and so on.Then when we started learning from this book, we were able to understand the concepts quite vividly in the beginning 2 chapters yet we were crawling when we reached chapter 4 of Hadoop:Definitive Guide. We got really frustrated and stopped reading this book and decided not to continue it again. But later realizing that it is the very foundation of Hadoop we had to move on.So left with no other option we started with a different plan. This time we started with HIVE.It was quite an easy chapter to our surprise.Then we went on to HBASE. It was PIG that surprised us the most.Even though written by the same author who wrote Chapter 4, this one was pretty simple and illustrative.Now when we found that we were able to proceed through the chapters, we came back to Chapter 5 and then covered the rest of Map-Reduce.But still Chapter 4 is a Mystery....Had to skip it forever...But we found yahoo material explaining serialization pretty well...But couldn't deal with AVRO...Still searching for materials to learn that....:)

It's lacking on a lot of details. Maybe it tries to cover too much; Hadoop is a large, and growing daily, ecosystem. It's not simple and extremely fluid. Calling any printed material a "definitive guide" is asking for trouble.One example of failed detail is around configuration for the "Fair scheduler." It basically says (in a few paragraphs) turn it on and let the defaults fly. The Hadoop Operations book has 3 pages on the subject and mentions at least 1, "You must configure this for it to work" variable.Buy it if you want a good overview of everything at the time of publishing. Don't if you expect it to be your handbook for building a Hadoop Cluster.

I bought this book for a project at work, to prototype a log analysis system using Hadoop. I haven't bought very many technical books in the last few years, but the quality of most online documentation for Hadoop is poor and books seemed like a better option. This book is considered the "bible" for Hadoop. It was useful, and I kept it open on my desk for quite a while as I worked to get the infrastructure set up. Consider it a high-level intro to lots of different Hadoop topics, and you'll be happy with it. Just don't expect it to answer all of your questions. You'll probably still end up doing a lot of digging through other online sources, because the Hadoop ecosystem is large and complicated, and no book can really cover all of it. Besides this book, I also bought Hadoop In Action (not quite as big as this book, but a useful counter-point) and Data Intensive Text Processing With MapReduce (which gave me a good intro to the Map Reduce algorithm, but wasn't that useful once I had a general idea what was going on).

I've some hadoop experience, and I'm finding this book hard to read because of the author's style and lack of organization. I would not recommend this book to a beginner looking to learn about Hadoop. The author goes deeply into some topics while referencing topics that have not been covered yet.That said, I haven't found any more complete book on Hadoop. This is packed with great information, but you might have to read it through more than once. It's best use, in my opinion, would be as a reference book.

I had read all the positive reviews and really had high hopes for the book, waited for the 3rd edition thinking it would be current, but I've mainly felt frustration in reading it once past the first few chapters.Reference to the Bible in other reviews are apt. The book is a mishmash of chapters with a wide variety of styles and intents. The writing giving the overview is great. But other chapters are a reference manual dump with little motivation. Other chapters tried to be guided tutorial, but lacked in important details (or were out dated by changes). Wish it could have been written with a clearer editorial point of view, or better organized in sections with similar purposes.Keeping up with a such a fast moving project with a paperback book is no doubt a difficult task. I didn't feel the book did a good job of dealing with the changes that happened with the shift to 1.x .Most frustrating were the mentions of the "book's website" as a source of up-to-date information. Which website? (hadoopbook.com, oreilly.com, github.com). Wouldn't it make sense to use a URL instead of the phrase "book's website?"Minor complaint, don't like the code listings without filenames.Expect to find a lot of time looking for stuff on the web that should have been included in the book or at least documented with a concrete URLs.There are certainly example of truly fine technical writing in the book. Just wish that level could have been maintained through out the book.
