If so, Johnson has all kinds of advice for how to cultivate their growth and how to give them the challenges that they need in the different points in their career. It is a solid approach that can benefit everyone. I appreciated the view that a good manager/team leader needs to evaluate where their team members are in their development in order to manage effectively. I have had some bosses who I wish had read this book and applied the principles in it. More often than not, I feel like managers are too busy to lead, which is such a waste. I think the advice in this book is helpful for everyone in all kinds of different environments. Read it!
As a long-time fan of Whitney Johnson’s work and wisdom, I was excited to receive an advanced copy of her latest book. Johnson knows disruption from every angle - disrupting herself personally and professionally many times to stay in her own S curve, as a manager, and as an investor. Build An A Team is the ultimate handbook for managers looking to create a business model and culture where people are valued for their unique “superpowersâ€.Johnson’s real-world examples (of both successes and failures) span horizontally over many disciplines and sectors, and vertically from an employee, manager of a few to a CEO of thousands and are truly inspiring. She provides diagnostic tools to help evaluate yourself and your team to see where your strengths are and where you need to build your team more.At the pace of 21st-century innovation, growth and disruption, this book is required reading if you want to build, retain, promote and develop A Team contributors.
I've learned so much from Whitney over the years and her thoughtfulness shines in this book. As she helps individuals find their distinctive strengths to make their organizations shine. Early in my career she helped me identify my superpowers and now I have bosses, both of whom I bought this book for, who saw that I was at the top of my S curve and moved me into an engaging role where I can now engage others. This book is perfect for any manager wanting to engage and disrupt their teams for greater success.
A gift to any leader determining how to lead their teams in turbulent, chaotic times. Build an A Team is a gift to management teams everywhere. I deeply appreciate the real world applicability I can use with teams and clients.
This book was such a great read. It made me think and assess where am I on the S-curve and whether I should disrupt myself to continue. Education is a different type of organization, as some teachers would love to keep teaching the same grade for the rest of their career. Sometimes that's great, because they bring something new to the classroom each year. But it could also become rote and routine, lacking the passion of being in the sweet spot. As a school principal, this book was invaluable. It helped me to think about where my teachers and staff are on their S curves, and how we can work together to disrupt or continue their trajectories. I would like to see my staff's answers on an S-curve survey in aggregate so I can better make decisions for the overall organization and the individual people within it.
As a co-creator of a start-up company it is important for me to know how to handle all aspects of the business. Unfortunately, my experience with recruitment is very limited, so I have had to resort to several sources to familiarize myself with the subject. Build an A Team has been a good resource for recruiting new talent and building a productive work team. One of the most relevant aspects has been the S-curve and how to choose employees located at different stages of that learning curve. Likewise, I love that the book focuses on teaching how to prioritize an employee’s potential and not just the work the person is going to do, it is certainly a fact that I would have liked to see in my past jobs.
I am a college tennis coach and athletic administrator. This book gives such great guidance on how to get the most from your team while helping them feel challenged and fulfilled. I feel so motivated to be an effective leader!
A great read! Whitney Johnson provides great tools for managers of all levels and those who aspire to become managers. Working within the S Curve, it's easy to visualize the goal of keeping your team in its collective sweet spot and each individual in their personal sweet spot. Professors would do well to include Johnson's concepts as part of their graduate curriculum.
