Review

“An incredibly fascinating and beautiful look at many of my favorite geologic playgrounds—a whole new perspective on the places and formations we love and how these unique landscapes were formed.” —Jimmy Chin, National Geographic photographer, The North Face athlete, director of award-winning documentary, Meru “An unusual, engaging book, enlivened by stories and beautiful aerial views, that shows clearly why geology is best understood from the air.” —QT Luong, photographer, author of bestselling Treasured Lands: A Photographic Odyssey Through America’s National Parks “Morton’s guide to amazing North American land formations would be notable for its gorgeous aerial photos alone, but it also contains a wealth of information on each location’s history.” —Booklist “Get your head into the clouds with Aerial Geology. . . . What better way to introduce geology to any reluctant science student than a book full of breathtaking ‘who knew?’ moments. Luckily, the writer and mountaineer (and, appropriately enough, resident of Big Sky, Mont.) Mary Caperton Morton knows. Take in the natural splendors of the view from an airplane window: This generously photographed volume even offers flight patterns that will reveal our earthly treasures.” —The New York Times Book Review “Geological history and information about each feature offers readers a richer understanding of the landscape than a coffee table book would provide. However, it must be said that the most eye-catching aspect of the book is its glorious photographs. . . . a reminder that these spectacular landscapes are, if not just around the corner, relatively close to home.” —NYBG’s Plant Talk “Offering a bird’s eye view that makes geology come alive, science and travel writer Mary Caperton Morton’s book feels like a personal helicopter ride across North America. It’s an extensive journey that covers Alaska’s Aleutian Islands to Maine’s Mount Katahdin to Mexico’s Chicxulub Crater, among many other breathtaking formations. . . . filled with beautiful photographs and fun facts.” —Smithsonian Magazine “It’s a visual feast. . . . A beautiful and massive tome. . . . This book would make an ideal gift for anyone who has an affinity for earth processes and breathtaking pictures.” —EARTH Magazine “Well-written. . . . beautifully illustrated.” —GeoTripper “Filled with incredible images, descriptive illustrations and fact-filled, geology-based explanations of how each site was formed and what makes each landform noteworthy.” —Stuck at the Airport   “Adventure armchair travel. . . . beautiful, fun, educational, and a great, great gift.” —Cathy Langer of the Tattered Cover “We highly encourage you to pick up a copy of Aerial Geology to read and enjoy. Or better yet, send it as a gift to your friends and family. Earth is an amazing place. Once you read Aerial Geology, you’ll have a whole new appreciation for our wonderful Planet.” —A Mountain Journey

I generally like and am supportive of science books for the general public-- I'm not a scientist myself, after all. And this one at least potentially serves a major need. It's well-conceived and laid out. And yet...The problem is that despite obvious careful research and planning in some things, this work is filled with so many factual errors I can't begin to cite them all. Embarrassing errors, even, that reveal the author's complete lack of deeper understanding of the subject matter. They begin with the introduction, literally on page one. There, the author refers to crinoids as ancient forms of plant life. They're not, and because they're so common in many areas this is one of the first things you learn when you study fossils in even the most casual way. Like the modern sea-lilies they're related to, they're animals. Later, the claim is made that the Earth's oceanic plates are subducted below continental plates because they're waterlogged, which makes them heavier. This is also untrue; the difference is that oceanic crust is richer in heavier, denser elements. This book is well-written by a competent wordsmith, the illustrations are very nice, and I suspect that many people with no knowledge of geology at all won't see a thing wrong with anything presented. Indeed, from a writing point of view it's well enough done that one may hope it'll inspire some readers to ask questions and seek out more knowledge. That's why I gave it three stars, instead of just two. But when one sets one's self up as an authority one should know the subject in question both broadly and deeply-- a few hours with Wikipedia is no substitute for reading at least a few actual books. At the very least it should've been proofread by an actual Earth scientist of one flavor or another, which it clearly was not.

As a geologist, I am a bit dissapointed with some obvious editorial errors that should have been caught by the author and/or editor. Some good stuff, and probably worthwhile for the general audience.

I was disappointed nothing about Hawaii was in this book. Filled with lots of information from the US and Canada, I would have liked to have seen more pictures, and it would have been better if after reading about Mt. Desert Island (Maine), the passage of Mt. Katahdin was after it instead of Canada. I learned a lot, but the more technical jargon could have been better defined. Also a timeline of all the epochs would be useful.

Absolutely beautiful book! The photos within are high quality. I bought this for my geology-loving friend and plan on getting one for myself because it's such a good book!

Revisiting the places I studied in the 20 years of Dr. Craig's Roadside Geology trips brought back many happy memories! This book also covered places I didn't get to study, to my great delight!!! I highly recommend this wonderful book to new students and old students who love to delve into the mysteries of land formations of North America!

Wonderful aerial pictures of geological formations in North America. I use it as an artist, for inspiration.

Beautiful ! Amazing ! Enlightening ! Humbling! All should should look at this, wouldn’t be in such a hurry to wreck the planet ! Just enough explanation of what you are seeing - & how it happened.

Lots of interesting sights and information, but with 101 individual sites, each described area has only a perfunctory overview and takes up a page or two at most. When some of these feature are dozens of miles in extant, a single photo or two and a few paragraphs of descriptive text doesn't do them justice.

From the Inside Flap

A unique and little-known religion, Sufism follows a mystical teaching and a way of life that has had an enormous though largely unrecognized impact on both the East and West for four thousand years. This authoritative book fills a colossal gap in Western documentation of Eastern subjects.

Until 1964, when “The Sufis” was published, Sufism was mostly the preserve of scholars, at least in the West. “The Sufis” began a new era, opening a window on Sufi activity, history and influence. Shah presents new information in an accessible way, and many readers feel that it’s a book they’ve been looking for. Stories, history, unusually lucid perspectives on human nature and spirituality, and challenges to assumptions and established ways of thinking, are intertwined throughout, eventually combining to produce a special kind of reading experience. “The Sufis” begins with the story of “The Islanders.” This is a “teaching story;” Shah’s name for a form of literature whose internal structure and dynamics can support and provoke experience in the reader (a Sufi speciality). Sometimes the learning happens at the time of reading, when the story helps us make sense of perceptions and experiences. Often, as Desmond Morris, author of “The Naked Ape” and ”The Human Zoo” observed, it’s a delayed effect that happens when we encounter situations in life that evoke a story. Morris is one of the leading observers of human nature who has commented on Shah’s work; others include author Doris Lessing, psychiatrist and author Arthur Deikman, and psychologist and author Robert Ornstein. After “The Islanders” sets the stage, “The Travelers and the Grapes”—another teaching story—opens a discussion of the contextual background. Here we start to look at the history of interaction of cultures; often concealed because spiritual practices not sanctioned by the authorities could have brought severe penalties over the last thousand years or so. Here we also begin to see the Sufi approach to spiritual development; which I’ve found to be unparalleled in lucidity about human nature. The chapter on “The Elephant in the Dark,” based on Rumi’s story, continues the intertwining of narrative, perspectives on human nature, and intercultural history. Then we meet the joke-figure Mulla Nasrudin, “one of the strangest achievements in the history of metaphysics,” whose antics illustrate “situations in which certain states of mind are made clear;” usually when he’s acting the idiot. Subsequent chapters introduce classical Sufis, including Rumi, Attar, Omar Khayyam, ibn el-Arabi, and el-Ghazzali, and trace the influence of Sufi thought and action on Western figures (such as Chaucer and St. Francis) and groups. We also meet the work of Western Sufis, such as Richard Burton (whose “Kasidah,” a remarkable poem of great depth, is reviewed), and are introduced to The Dervish Orders, The Creed of Love, Magic and Miracles, and more. Of course, over the five decades since its publication, some things have changed. In his discussion of Sufi orders, which do not need traditional buildings and grounds except as required by local economic and political conditions, Shah mentions that “one Arabic publishing company is a Sufi organization. In some areas all the industrial and agricultural workers are Sufis.” This might have changed in the political, economic and military upheavals of the past fifty years, but the principle remains the same; the “order” is in the hearts and networks of people. The “beautiful tomb,” of the great teacher Data Ganj Bakhsh (Ali el-Hujwiri), in Lahore, “venerated by people of all creeds,” was bombed by terrorists in 2010. The Idries Shah Foundation print and Kindle editions of “The Sufis” omit the original Introduction by Robert Graves (I like Grave’s commentary but “The Sufis” is complete without it). Still, five decades after its publication, “The Sufis” continues to be relevant. At first reading, and later re-readings after intervals, “The Sufis” continues to pack advanced spiritual psychology, eye-opening history, and impacts that both confirm and extend perceptions, and highlight and disconfirm prejudices and assumptions, into a special reading experience.posted by Jay Einhorn, PhD, LCPC, www.psychatlarge.com

In “The Sufis” Idries Shah does not hold his punches. Straight out of the gate he states, “Humanity is asleep, concerned only with what is useless, living in a wrong world.” Shah strips from Sufism any of the woo woo spirituality often attached to mysticism from the east. Shah grounds his projection of Sufism in the practical - knowledge we all could use. Yet the reader will likely not see this practicality right away because Shah conveys this knowledge through teaching stories. The reader will likely confuse teaching stories with children tales. They aren’t. Teaching stories expose the muddled mind that stands between the normal human and their full potential. Let me illustrate my point with my favorite story from the Sufis. On one occasion a neighbor found Nasrudin down on his knees looking for something. “What have you lost, Mulla?”“My key,” said Nasrudin. After a few minutes of searching, the other man said, “Where did you drop it?”“At home.”“Then why, for heaven’s sake, are you looking here?”“There is more light here.” Shah, Idries. The Sufis (p. 76). ISF Publishing. Kindle Edition. The reader would do well to look for the key that they lost here in “The Sufis.” 5 Stars

Powerful insight into one of the world’s most secretive and esoteric schools of thought (to simplify with a standard definition, they would not agree with such a narrow scope as ‘thought’)

Mostly I am responding to the review by Wrightson, who sounds like an anti-Shah crusader, perhaps jealous that his pitiful and venomous self-published book does not sell – I could not persuade any of my local libraries to buy it while all of them, both public and academic ones, carry MANY books by Idries Shah.I think he confuses Sufism with some systems with which Sufism does not share much, and then he expresses his disappointment that he did not get what he wanted but what is actually there. It is like expecting some intoxicant but discovering that you get nutritious substance but without the expected kick. So, he actually fights his own demons but why he involves the book The Sufis and the most remarkable teacher Idries Shah is incomprehensible to an objective observer. The real Sufism is not some kind of either intellectual speculation or religious emotion. It is a pragmatic system which can lead the honest to self-development, to transcending ordinary confusion, from being as it were blind to Reality.Non-Sufis and fake Sufis are AT BEST people who (to continue the analogy) are blind but through frequent bumping into objects (our ordinary trial and error existence) memorized what is located where in order to avoid future painful collisions. Such a system can be used as an ersatz of real perceptions but in the fluid world the ‘memorized location of objects’ is constantly changes. Therefore this method of living is far from being efficient, as we can see in our daily lives (full of painful mistakes and misunderstanding) and by watching/reading the news, usually about bad things. We ALL use such a system because we do not know how to develop ‘sight’.Thus comparing Sufism to anything else but itself, as Wrightson does, is a misunderstanding. All these other systems are not capable of leading the seeker to developing “the sixth sense”. And they are NOT a source of Sufi inspiration, Sufism does not owe anything to them whatever the superficial similarities. These other systems are fossils of what once might have been a living school, as contemporary Sufism is. Nowadays, they have only mostly cultural, anthropological, historical, quasi-religious or other significance, but they have nothing to do with what Shah describes and what Wrightson does is worse than comparing apples and oranges. The Sufi books do not function as a source of secrets how to go to heaven or to live heavenly life here and now. I remember talking to a manager of an ‘esoteric’ bookstore who said that Idries Shah just teases but never openly says how things are. This eager would-be ‘esotericist’ craves to be told what to memorize and use, as in a secret society or something. He barks up the wrong tree. The secret is that there is no secret of THIS type. The books, plus guidance and HONEST effort may lead to the ability of seeing this secret by developing the skill, the ability, the organ of seeing. How could you explain to a country bumpkin an intricate scientific concept? He needs to go to appropriate schools first, to build a foundation. There is a wonderful analogy to that in the tale of The Algonquin Cinderella in another book by Idries Shah World Tales. Only the honest youngest sister can see the Invisible One. The only reviewer here who gave the book only one star (and he also did it with other books by Idries Shah) is perhaps angry that he is like the older sisters of Cinderella: they may desire to see the Invisible One but have not developed the prerequisite ‘sixth sense’, they did not have what it takes. The hopeful thing is, that the older sisters, at one level of interpretation, can be seen as older selves, can be transcended, can actually morph into the youngest sister, capable of seeing the Invisible One. Can the angry crusader undergo such a metamorphosis? Of course. Epiphanies on the road to Damascus happen more often than we think. Here is your chance Wrightson. Are you a sincere seeker after truth or just a desperate peddler of your own claptrap? But I should not confront your ghoul so directly, as you can read in The Riddles, one of stories in Shah’s World Tales. It can help. It did help me. I was perhaps as full of air as you are. What a relief it was when my ghoul collapsed under its own weight like the Soviet Union.Unless the reader becomes like Cinderella, they have no chance of success and there musings lead nowhere, which may cause eruptions of anger, depression, disbelief and many other emotions except the only result that matters: seeing.A good method of increasing one's suitability for the Teaching is by being generous. It helps to eliminate anger, greed and self-esteem which are major stumbling blocks on the road to develop new perceptions. These perceptions are not esoteric in the sense that everyone has them to some degree in his own area of expertise, either his profession or hobby. The Way of the Sufi (yet another book by Idries Shah) is a specific methodology which helps one find higher perceptions in all areas of life, going beyond one’s forte. Good luck to the honest seekers.Of course honesty is not necessarily inborn, so do not despair, you can develop it. Start by choosing the title which is in the format which you already like, otherwise you will start with an additional handicap, on top of all the other ones which we already have with all our fascination-cum-worries of the phenomenal world. With time and practice you can transcend your ordinary anxieties and your linear thinking. But not if you are greedy for quick results, even disguised (dishonestly) as search for truth (Seeker After Truth may disabuse you of such ideas).I just discovered on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sufis) more specific information about The Sufis new edition made available for the 50th anniversary of the original publication. This is Shah's first and fundamental presentation of Sufism in the West where in the last century only scarce authentic knowledge was available (like his father's books) or one could find only uninformed and superficial accounts of a scholarly "orientalist" type. Here, one can find out how Sufism has been invisibly influencing the world affairs for millenia, perhaps starting with antiquity, including the Greek ancient philosophers of our own tradition.Shah was attacked by entrenched interests but he has proven by his own life and publications that real Sufism is alive and that any other form is just imitation, whether piously religious or academic. One can read about Sufism or in Sufism, but a historian of, say, medicine is usually not capable of purforming a surgery on you. To whom would you rather go for consultation? Probably a surgeon rather than a historian, however bright and entertaining.Same in the most important area of your own development, your own understanding of where you came from and where will you go.Ordinarily, we in the West have had a choice of believing the religious myths or, seeing their inadequacy, becoming atheists or agnostics. Shah provides the better, and the only real, alternative: knowledge which may come if the intended receiver has become capable of receiving. Sufism is a miracle as if teaching my dog how to read, talk and reason. If I can admit that I am relatively as stuipid vis-a-vis the real mechanisms of life as my dog is relative to reading - then I can start from this posture of humility, having emptied myself of dirty water to admit the clean one.Enjoy. Perhaps at first only at the level of clearing the underbrush and admitting new information.

Always has been a terrific book and still is if you want to get a glimpse of this very dynamic veiw into the history and essence of Sufism from a Sufi master who is now deceased.

A classic sacred tome I purchased for a friend because I could not part with my own copy. Received before projected date of arrival.

Review

“Wonderful. . . . Rich in insights and fresh perspectives. . . . Brands is something of a rare breed. . . . This volume shows the precision and attention to detail that one would expect from a scholar and, at the same time, reads like a novel. . . . It may well be the best general biography of Franklin Roosevelt we will see for many years to come.” —Christian Science Monitor “Excellent. . . . If you want to understand how a great president should act, Traitor to His Class is must reading.” —The New York Observer “[Roosevelt] was an extraordinarily complicated man and the author copes skilfully with his complexity. . . . Mr. Brands is masterly.” —The Economist “A graceful account of this complex, controversial, political genius who, everyone agrees, changed the course of history. Well-researched and exquisitely detailed.” —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “Fresh, approachable, even-handed.” —Boston Globe “H. W. Brands has accomplished a remarkable feat in this terrific work. As if he were creating characters in a novel, he has brought to vivid life the central figures in his story—FDR, Eleanor, Sara Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and the inner circle in the White House—while at the same time providing a fresh understanding of the rich historical context for their thoughts and actions at every step along the way.” —Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author of Team of Rivals

I was given this audiobook as a gift and found it to be a good, though perhaps overly brief overview of the life of one of our most controversial and celebrated Presidents. I suspect that my version (10 1/2 hours) is an abridged version, though I do not see that printed on the CD container. The book is perhaps more detailed. My great grandfather, an entrepreneur from the early 20th century despised Roosevelt more than the devil. The New Deal, support of organized labor, the income tax, socialism, all went against everything he believed in. He was convinced that World War II saved Roosevelt from defeat in the 1940 election and a lasting and deserved reputation as an abject failure as President. Nevertheless, World War II did in fact lift the country out of the Great Depression, and lifted Roosevelt into the pantheon of our most celebrated Presidents. This book is a fair and balanced treatemnt of Roosevelt's life. It is not a hagiography and gives the failures as well as the successes of Roosevelt's life and Presidency.

This 888 page book is a scholarly and thorough book about the life of FDR. It gives the background of his family, a detailed look at his upbringing and family life though school as a privileged member of the upper class of America. It gives a close look at his social life and love life of his twenties, his marriage to Eleanor and various intimacies throughout his life. It details the control of Sara, his mother over his life financially, and the beginnings of FDR’s ambitions and goals. The author shows how his exuberance and personality slowly but surely emerged.,His political involvement began to rise at a time when America had changed from an agrarian to a manufacturing country with property in the hands of a few, and communication was with telegraph, telephone, and radio. Immigrants from all over the world bringing their various religious beliefs and hope for a better life, also brought more obvious class differences, often unequal. When FDR was inaugurated in 1933 one quarter of the country was unemployed and hunger and poverty where everywhere, effecting loss of homes and property and leaving a sense of despair. He immediately began to change the economy, taking bold steps and choosing good men to help, creating the New Deal. As the country makes a turn-around, he is faced with rising world problems; and war in Europe slowly but surely effects the country, driving the isolationists to a minority and bringing the US into a world power of its own.Throughout the book the reader sees him developing great leadership, making bold decisions and communicating to the American people through radio—his Fireside Chats. The author describes and quotes conversations with many leaders; especially interesting are those of the Stalin, FDR and Churchill as they discuss strategy and post war plans for disarmament, boundaries, the United Nations and other necessary reorganizational issues. The readers follow his life as he contracts polio in his first term and fights back, keeping his presidency from a wheel chair most of the time throughout his third term, unprecedented, and into the beginning fourth and last to his death in 1945.For the inquiring reader, included in lengthy and thorough appendix are footnotes and references.

As someone who has read a great many books about FDR, I must say this is the very best I've ever read. My husband and I both are "history nuts," and I've been reading bits of this to him. I bought the hardback, and found the print too small for my aging eyes, so then I had it loaded onto my Kindle - which I would highly recommend to anyone who can't read small print comfortably. The author addresses all aspects of Roosevelt's life with an unbiased honesty that is refreshing. Yes, I would recommend this to anyone who loves history in general, or Roosevelt in particular.

I’m glad I read this, my third “big ol book” by H.W. Brands (“American Colossus” and “TR”). I have had the same feeling after each book. Satisfaction of finishing a well written, important book about crucial and often heroic events. Profound insight into this country, politics and business. But where was the heart? Maybe it’s the tough subject matter – business and industry, and two charismatic presidents who never “left the stage” and so there are fewer opportunities for deep sentiment. But I’m guessing it’s just more Brand’s style, and if I really wanted sappy, those bio’s have probably already been written . . . My only other minor complaints are that the end seems kind of rushed, and there was very little written about the WPA program of the 30’s – the one that put 2 million people to work for a while. I like FDR's quote mentioned in the end "great power involves great responsibility." That's a great theme. I'm ashamed to say I thought Spiderman's uncle came up with that. Finally, I’m getting tired of good people dying at the end of their biography. They need to stop that.

A traitor to his class is an apt description of a paralyzed man who became President of the US. FDR brought the government to the people with social security, job training, jobs, educational opportunities, and had a wife that demonstrated compassion for poor and working class. He may have just another politician to some, but for the many, FDR was sent by God to serve America. No wonder FDR's photo was on every fireplace mantel This book shows in detail what a great President he was and why my father's generation of workers so admired him. He was a hero in peace and war. A truly engrossing book about this rare national leader.

Though I have read many biographies of FDR, I thoroughly enjoyed Brands rebelling of his life and presidency. I especially was drawn to FDR's struggles with polio as I have Cerebral Palsy and could relate to his grim determination to not let his disability stop him from his ambitions which led to his leadership in winning WWII. I also learned much more about his loveless marriage with Eleanor and how they lived two very separate and different lives. Greatly paced and well written. I hated for the book to end.

'Twas an interesting read. Definitely something I'd recommend to readers who enjoy a who-dun-it mixed with scifi & feminist & lesbian lit interests. All loose ends were tied up save for one: it isn't explained why time travel ends when it does. I'd like to see a sequel resolve this issue. I can't wait to read that novel!

I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did. I am a big fan of time travel novels, and I like sci-fi books that feature a mainly real world type setting with one or two unusual elements thrown in. Here, it was the fact that time travel had been invented by four women scientists in 1967.However, the book, more than being really a sci-fi or time travel novel, is a mystery, and the mystery was not enough to hold my interest. It's a locked room type mystery, and not really that mysterious---we know early on too much about it, and the slow unfolding of what we don't know didn't carry the book, in my eyes. The writing is very, very deadpan. Sometimes I had to go back and read a paragraph again, one where something that should be quite shocking happens, but it's written in such a calm and measured way I'm not even sure it did happen. This isn't always bad, and the writing isn't bad, but just a bit dry.I did like some of the characters quite a bit, and other I disliked for the right reasons, because they were well-written to be evil. However, there are just too many characters, and some of them seem quite unnecessary. For example, one of the four inventors of time travel, Lucille, has very little to do with the rest of the book, and I think it could have been just three inventors without changing much. I often had to go back and check who people were---Fay? Julie? Angharad? You just can't care about that many people in a novel of this length, at least when there is not more building of of them---when they are more just people things happen to.The time travel here is of the variety where nothing can be changed, just observed, but you can meet your former or future self all you want, over and over---you can get big crowds of yourself together even. That's interesting, but there's a lot that confused me---doesn't the mere fact you meet your future self influence your future actions?Overall, I would say if you like time travel writing of any kind very much, or if you like reading books that are mostly all about women, this might be worth a read. I wouldn't read it for the mystery or the plot, probably, but I think the author has some promise.

From my wife Sarah: I'm a huge scifi fan and I especially love time travel novels. Outlander is one of my favorite series for example. The problem I'm having is that this book feels very dry and slow. I don't feel compelled to come back to the book and finish. I got this book a a free Vine copy and I was waiting to finish it to leave a complete review, but I can't get myself to get back to it.I'm feeling like I'm reading a business report rather than a well told story. I'm not experiencing those things that draw me in to a good scifi book. While the book has an interesting premise, the character development isn't there, and the story is dragging along at a snails pace. Even when there's a clue that something may be wrong and someone might not survive, it's not all that powerfully done.So honestly for most scifi, time travel fans, I'd recommend other books such as the Outlander series.

I have always been fascinated by time travel stories in which time travel seemingly cannot create reality-altering paradoxes (e.g. "To Say Nothing of the Dog" by Connie Willis). As this book's title suggests, it explores what kind of psychological effect this sort of time travel might have on people. The author does so with a degree of thoughtfulness and complexity that I don't think I have seen before in time travel sci-fi. Topics explored include crime & punishment, romance, mental illness, bullying, fate/fatalism, and especially the fear of death. What makes the plot great isn't the solution of the mystery (the "whodunnit to whom?" is obvious well before the end). Rather, the fun is in watching the characters figure it out and seeing how the three different story arcs (starting in 1967, 2017, and 2018) fit together. The actual narration of the story was a bit flat (e.g. sometimes something momentous would happen and it would be stated so blandly that I would have to go back and reread to make sure I read correctly), but the plotting and worldbuilding more than made up for it.To me, the characters seemed a bit contrived to check as many "strong, diverse female character" boxes as possible (e.g. black, immigrant, lesbian, mentally ill, lower working class, aristocratic...). All the primary and secondary characters are women with a handful of men putting in very brief whiny, overprotective, and/or leering appearances. Though it felt a bit overplayed, if you are looking for sci-fi with strong female characters, this is it.Overall, the plotting, worldbuilding, and psychology mostly made up for any bits that felt flat or contrived.

Angie has settled in quickly since she came home to help her parents with the diner and at home. She convinces her estranged brother to visit and again murder falls into their plans. This book dealt less with the dog sled aspect and more with the relationships of the protagonists. I missed learning more about dogsledding it thoroughly enjoyed the book.

This is quick, fast-paced book that I couldn’t put down. I enjoyed following along as Angie set out to solve the mystery. I was kept guessing as to who the culprit was until the final reveal, though I did have my suspicions. I’m looking forward to reading more in this series.

Angie’s brother comes home for a visit after being away ten years, bringing his fiancée along with him. At his welcome home party, a body is found in their yard. I was unable to put this book down until the end. I was excited that Angie’s brother came back home to settle things with his family. Can’t wait for Book 3!

Review

Although some parents will read the topic list and want to believe their daughters are too young for certain facts, we need to remember that research has shown that most parents underestimate their kids’ readiness, interest, and need for sex education. Regarding sexuality and many other complex topics, children typically absorb what they are ready for and leave the rest for later. This book is your insurance policy that you are providing your daughter with the vital information she needs for sexual health and safety. (Laura Kastner, Ph.D.)If you are worried about your daughter’s ability to navigate the modern world of sexuality, offer her this book and give her what she needs to make great choices. Jo Langford tackles everything from periods and consent to sexting and being safe online. With a healthy dose of humor and practical, real-world advice and tips, this book will give teen girls a leg up when it comes to making decisions about sex. (Amy Lang, M.A.)Spare Me ‘The Talk’! provides adolescent girls a straightforward, thorough primer on sex that demystifies myths and provides answers for young women who are exploring sexual decision-making to help them make more informed choices. Today’s girls are bombarded with mixed messages about sexuality; Jo Langford has created a resource that delivers information that adolescent girls can access over and over again. (Julie Metzger R.N., M.N.)

I agree with other reviews stating that this is a book for girls that is clearly written by a man, with limited understanding from his male perspective. While I appreciate his frank style overall, his warning to girls that they may be their "own worst enemy" came across to me as a slippery slope to victim blaming. His statement that large breasts are inherently painful is also inaccurate--some are, some aren't. This is a revised version of his book for boys, with a bit of editing to direct it towards an audience of girls. Partnering with a woman author/healthcare provider would improve this book. The intentions are good, and he clearly wants to support healthy sexuality, but this books does miss the mark at times.

A bit too much information for middle school students. Probably good for high school girls.

Must read for teenagers along with their parents. Girls often think they know all about this stuff; however, Jo Langford breaks new ground here.

I wanted to like this book, and while there are some great aspects there are too many fails. Here's a rundown:The positives:1. As mentioned already by others, it is great that he has integrated really good LGBTQIA+ concepts and issues and in a way that demonstrates open acceptance and warmth. This is the best part of this book and in this area I think the author did a great job.2. It's great he's addressing issues related to consent and how it applies to sexual activities but also as it applies beyond sex.3. He does bring up many good, high value topics that the reader may be uncomfortable discussing with a parent, friend or even healthcare provider. (however, too many of the topics lack adequate or accurate information)The negatives:There are several disappointments that, to me, outweigh the positives:1. It is apparent that he is not a healthcare provider and his understanding of menses (periods) and female physiology is limited.2. It is apparent that he is a male (physiologically in body and in identification) and therefore, again, has a limited understanding of menses & particularly the impact of first menses and adolescent development on female pre-teens/tweens.3. There are parts of the intro that carry a judgmental tone, with a bit of shaming and guilt thrown in - this might turn off a reader right off. Specifically it is found in the paragraphs that include his presentation of statistics on sexual activity and sex, the statement that parents worry, and that girls(and boys) can become their own worst enemies. Perhaps he was going for a high intensity hook to lure in the reader with shocking stats and an emotional trigger, however, it is more likely to turn away female readers. If I were looking for information and support on a vulnerable sensitive topic I would not go with the book that blasted me with negatives on the first page. The intro should convey acceptance and a non-judgmental expression of caring. It should create a sense of safety in reading about sensitive topics by a caring author.4. There are NO images at all - none. So as he attempts to describe female external anatomy of genitalia, such as vulva, labia, etc. there is no visual reference. This is essential for any kind of anatomy or health related discussion. Sure, she can look online and find an image or diagram, but this reduces the usefulness and impact of the book – she might as well look everything up online if that’s the case. If she's reading a book then she chose that format for a reason and all pertinent details and reference material (ie: images) should be in there.General description of some issues:His discussion on menses is very "clunky" and feels both awkward and uncomfortable. The warmth and relatedness he's able to convey about LGBTQIA+ issues is not present in this area. Additionally, the information is not presented well from both my healthcare provider and female perspective, and it does nothing to support a nervous or scared preteen who is seeking more information about her body, menses and the overall experience of puberty and adolescence. There is nothing to help her feel good about her body and the amazing aspects or magic of this process that half the people in our world experience. Culturally there is still a negative connotation and taboo aspect to women’s bodies (other than sexually) and our normal, natural processes and rhythms. There is a certain vulnerability for most young females who may be reading this book and attempting to learn about this information, and the tone and overall voice in chapters 1, 2, & 3 doesn't offer the necessary comfort around these topics. Additionally, IMO (and also from my pre-teen daughter) the use of "girls" and "boys" feels patronizing for a young person entering and/or in adolescence, and especially from a male speaking to a female (culture, context and history are relevant). The author vacillates back and forth between language that is anatomically appropriate and more mature to language that can "feel" patronizing or “talking down to” from an younger adolescent's perspective...Using girls and boys vs. female or male for example (which feels patronizing and "othering" according to my pre-teen daughter and some pre-teens I work with). A further example of this mix of voice and tone is appropriately discussing vulva, labia, etc. but then collectively calling them "girl parts" and saying "If you are worried about any health issue, especially one that has to do with your swimsuit area" - Swimsuit area? Girl-parts? Really? Are we back to societal mores that inhibit appropriate naming and mention of female body parts? I'm not saying he's sexist, judgmental or purposeful in using this tone or wording, rather it wasn't fully thought out from a female perspective and that the voice & wording regarding these female issues were not so thoughtfully and carefully chosen as those he used regarding LGBTQIA+ topics. His discussion on menstrual supplies was inadequate and seemed to have an inherent bias towards tampons with the implication that pads are for "newbies" or those with heavy flow or only night time. Pads are a viable option for any female anytime and all the time, and many women would rather use pads than tampons. The toxic shock syndrome discussion seems minimized, placed several paragraphs beyond the tampon discussion, yet they are the significant cause out of all the methods discussed. The discussion also implies that low-absorbency tampons eliminate the chance of toxic shock syndrome which is not true - there are many variables with absorbency levels just one of them. There is a section about what the reader should do if a male asks her about her period and it starts out very good and affirming. However, it ends with "many guys wouldn't be able to handle it” which feels very othering (again) as well as somewhat patronizing. Again, I don’t believe this is the authors intent, but it is an example of not giving full consideration to the socio-cultural aspects of being female in the same thoughtful manner in which he did for LGBTQIA+, there’s an unfortunate disconnect there. Some of his medically related information isn't what I'd want my daughter, her friends, or my clients to be told as it's not correct and could potentially prevent a female from seeing her provider until much later when more severe symptoms develop. An example is in his description of vaginal and vulvular yeast infections. He states "There is an intense itching, burning sensation, localized in the vagina and vulva, which can become so painful it can become hard to walk". This would be true for a more developed & severe yeast infection, but earlier she may not have itching or only mild itching and for some there are no symptoms at all. Reading this she may put off a healthcare visit even if she has the other, earlier symptoms, therefore allowing the infection to grow in intensity and severity. His description of female arousal is based on - what many of us in healthcare and sexology consider - dated information. When sexuality was first studied medically, the original arousal description was based on male arousal patterns then generalized to women in a manner that made women's arousal "fit" the male pattern description. However, there is much newer information and data showing that the excitement-plateau-orgasm-resolution-refractory model doesn't truly fit the female arousal experience (there is a video of a lecture by a Stanford MD & professor describing this older understanding vs the new findings and understanding in a presentation called "changes in women's sexual function through the lifespan..." for those interested)His contraceptive discussion, again, has issues. It is missing important information and not current with all of the latest information or data. He does state “accurate as of when this book was written”, but that disclaimer isn’t as meaningful to many adolescents (or adults for that matter). Medical information can be challenging to put into a book as the understanding and practices update constantly. Trying to go more generic with your information in hopes of not bumping up against changes in medical practice doesn’t always work well either, as sometimes too little or too general information can be more harmful then helpful. This is one area where online information from a reputable source, such as Scarlateen will absolutely be more accurate as it is regularly updated and medical providers are consulted for all the medically related content. It is hard to find regularly updated medical information print material now days, as much has been moved online or into apps which can be updated on the fly .There are many inconsistencies in his overall physiological (how the body works) & medical discussions and I couldn't help but pick it apart while reading. However, I think I've mentioned enough in this review at this point.Overall: His intent was good but the author would have fared better if he'd partnered with a primary care provider or gynecologist as a co-author, and particularly one who is very current on their information, especially as it relates to adolescents. It would have benefited even more if it had been written by a female, as first hand knowledge and experience is very relevant, particularly when addressing sensitive information to an adolescent audience. I believe his intentions were good, but he should have stuck with his guide for males, and again, co-authored with a medical provider for that one as well.

At the outset, let me say that I essentially have no opinion on this work. I cannot say it is “good” or “bad” I can say that I would not recommend it because of the author’s failure to vet his sources and for his declaration of his own personal philosophies. I ordered the book because I have two grandchildren, a boy and a girl, approaching adolescence. I rather doubt they would seek advice on the “facts of life” from their aging grandfather, but I did realize that there is a vast gulf separating me from kids that age and I have little direct knowledge of how they think. I do know that it is different – happily – than when I was growing up and practiced taking cover under my school desk. By the same token, I see kids going and coming from the Local middle-school and often find myself wondering how those young girls were allowed to leave home dressed as they are. Yes, I am definitely an old man who think s the youth of today are irredeemable. On YouTube I have come across some remarkable young women who offer videos on various aspects of being a young woman. One of them, who is now 18 and just entering college, has been making such videos for five years. She is remarkably wise and has a large audience of young female fans – with, in my opinion, good reason. I marvel at the openness about maturation and sexuality. My childhood education consisted of old wife’s tales: there were no “sex education” classes. So I thought perusing “The Talk” would provide me insight. My error. I make my living as an expert witness. Whenever I offer an opinion, I must be able to support it through conformance with the scientific method. I am not allowed to guess or speculate: just facts and nothing but the facts. As you might expect, I am a critical reader. If an author presents something as fact, I expect it to be verifiable fact. Jo Langford severely damaged his credibility with me on the very first page by asserting “[a]bout a third of you will have been sexually assaulted in some way before your eighteenth birthday”. I checked his footnote – yes, I check footnotes – and found that the “organization” he is quoting from is itself quoting from an unattributed source. As it happens, I am familiar with the study this claim was derived from and it allowed, actually encouraged, respondents to list feeling uncomfortable if a male was looking at them as “sexual assault”. I checked out other of his citations and found the same circumstance: author Langford often cites unverifiable claims as “facts”. I am not comfortable with sources like this, where the facts may not be factual – and I don’t trust an author who apparently does not check their own sources thoroughly. There are other things that left me uncomfortable with the author. He describes himself as a “kinda crunchy, sorta groovy, West Coast, American, liberal, educated, secular, cisgender, bisexual, white dude”. Langford may just be too hip for me. I didn’t find the content to be particularly well informed and I suspect that teen girls might find his style didactic and condescending. But again, I am far from being a teen and not a female, so my opinion could well be entirely worthless. So in the end, I can honestly offer no opinion, one way or another on the book as a whole. I think the author is very sloppy in his presentation of authorities in support of his opinions and, as a result, have little faith in his accuracy. But that is a criticism of the author. There is no “Look Inside” feature available at the time of this writing for the print edition of this book.. When you read this, there may be. If there is, I strongly suggest you use it and make your own decision.Jerry
