Review

“Attar’s grand allegory for the journey of the soul as it seeks union with the divine has influenced countless artists, poets, mystics, and believers around the world. But never before has it been rendered in English with such beauty, elegance, and precision. Wolpé’s translation of this epic is sure to be as timeless as the masterpiece itself.” - Reza Aslan, author of Zealot“I was struck by this accomplished translation, which moves the reader along from one stanza to the next in strong, compelling rhythms. I think what Sholeh Wolpé has done exceedingly well is to bring this medieval poem over into lively, contemporary English that feels absolutely right and not at all forced.” - Edith Grossman, author of Why Translation Matters“In Sholeh Wolpé’s version, this sly, knowing Sufi classic will surprise and delight a new generation of readers.” - Jack Miles, general editor of The Norton Anthology of World Religions“As close to the original a reader can come in translation, and imbued with the same kind of revelation, it makes clear why Attar remained such a strong influence on Rumi. The reader travels, along with the poet’s birds, to greater spiritual insight through transcendent verse.” - Roger Sedarat, Queens College

If you love the wisdom, poetry, and beauty of Gibran, Hafiz, and Rumi, you will be delighted to read The Conference of the Birds by Attar (1145-1220 C.E.). Considered by Rumi to be the “master” of Sufi mystic poetry, Attar is best known for this epic poem. Rumi revered Attar so much that he said of him, “Attar traveled through all seven cities of love, while I am only at the bend of the first alley.” This alone was enough to entice me to learn more. This translation by Sholeh Wolpe evokes the beauty and lyricism of Attar using the mode of storytelling via poetry. Indeed Hafiz and Rumi later adopted this same technique. Wolpe captures, for all to understand, Attar’s magnificent allegorical tale about the human struggle for meaning, both physical and spiritual. In Sufi tradition, Attar elucidates life’s mysteries not often appreciated by preaching at people. Rather he tells us ancient Sufi stories and anecdotes that lead us to the truth.Wolpe has captured the intense beauty of the original Persian masterpiece and has transformed it into contemporary English poetic prose. She is an award-winning poet in her own right and her prose is not wanting. It is filled with exquisite sketches, stunning pictorial descriptions, and subterranean emotions. She has captured Attar’s wisdom through allegorical images and oodles of treasured stories, all told by the plush birds of the Earth. There is much to contemplate, love and enjoy in this work. Read it with an open heart and pearls of wisdom will flow into your lap and leave you serene and peaceful.

We are the birds that embrace both strength and weakness. How to get from here to there...when there is actually here. The Path is the destination when the destination becomes the Path.

This is a wonderful story which is just as applicable to our modern day as any other time in history.

Thank you for making this extraordinary tale accessible to English speakers! Incredible undertaking. Bravo !

Absolutely gorgeous translation of a timeless piece. If you like Rumi, then go to the source. It is beautiful.

Genius. This translation of Attars classic book, "The Conference of the Birds," by Sholeh Wolpé is beautiful. The images and meditations are heart wrenching and poignant. Thank you, Sholeh Wolpé for translating a version of Attar's classic work that is as intelligent as it is beautiful, and that flows from the page as if it were written solely for the English reader. This book, as good as it is, leaves me in a state of awe, wondering how gorgeous the version written in Farsi must be, yet overwhelmingly content with the version that I have just read. Thank you for taking on this project and making it one of the best translations I've ever read. And thank you for shining a spotlight on the Iranian literary tradition, something that is especially important right now.

I was so happy to see this translation. I teach world literature, and the earlier translation is practically unreadable. My students loved this version, especially because the parables are in prose, which lends to the readability. Certainly we talk about the format of the original format of the couplets, but in this translation, the students are able to connect with the content and the themes in a more practical way, especially for an undergraduate survey course. And just from the standpoint of a general interest reader, this translation has finally made Attar accessible, relevant, and enjoyable. It's a great book, and I highly recommend it.

The Conference of the Birds is an epic poem of 93 pages, written in 1177 by the Persian poet Attar of Nishapur. A group of birds wants to appoint a leader. The hoopoe, the wisest of them all, says that they should find Simurgh to be their leader, but, she says, the road is long and the sea is deep on the way to Mount Qaf.Throughout the story, the birds receive much advice. The wise Sufi advises to ‘make sure then that the bird of ambition aquires wings of aspiration, and give to your heart and reason the ecstasy of the soul.’ Others give advice too – the Muslim warrior, the Christian crusader, the Indian Rajah, the astrologer, and a holy fool.Of the thousands of birds who set out on the journey, how many reach the end ‘with neither feathers nor wings’ on the way to the heights of immortality? This age-old allegorical tale has everything from the spiritual to the earthly, and from humour to tragedy, but especially, it has the wisdom of the ages. It’s a glorious story.
