I love these State Hiking Guide Series books! List the best hikes in each particular state as well as important information (map, length, difficulty, etc.). I always buy the book for a particular state before my hiking trips, as it saves me both time and hassle.
Good review of each hike. Lists description, type, difficulty, and more. How to find the trail head is helpful. A map of the hike is included.
I have hiked several of the hikes listed in this book. The descriptions and directions are accurate and easy to use. The maps for each trail are simple and easy to read. I look forward to doing more of the hikes I have discovered because of this guide. Highly recommend to fellow hikers.
Hiking Montana is a basic but useful guidebook. I would have preferred to have the hikes ordered by level of difficulty, or at the very least the hike number listed under each category in the introduction instead of just the hike name.
The book is well written and is organized in a way that allows you to find a hike based on the area you are looking at. Descriptions and directions seem to be accurate.
I really love using this book to help find hiking and backpacking destinations. Unlike other hiking bookings this one has a good selection from most of the common hiking areas in Montana. The description of the hikes are accurate about the difficulty and what you see on the way to the destination. I bought my copy in 2006. My copy has been out on the trail so much that nearly every page has dirt, or rain/snow drops marks or has sticky notes!
The book's information and descriptions for the trails it has are decent, but it's missing quite a few of them I personally know in the Missoula area. Some of the lesser known trails' omission is forgivable, but not listing Blue Mountain? I mean, come on. That would be like listing attractions in San Diego, and not mentioning the zoo.If you're hoping for an end-all reference encylopedia of Montana trails like I was, this ain't it. But, if you're happy with a rather spotty listing of trails mostly focused around waterways, this is your book.
Very informative book. There are several hikes in it I have already hiked and I have found some I would like to hike.
