It is true that like Ocean's 11, this story is fun, contains delicious plot twists, and features a story which will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. It is also true that it takes place in space. What this accurate yet incomplete description fails to convey is the thought-provoking nature of the novel and the strong characterization which Künsken employs throughout.All of the main characters in The Quantum Magician are complex, featuring conflicting impulses and desires. They grow throughout the novel, and by the end are different people than they were at the beginning. However, this is not the only source of depth in the novel. There are a number of compelling themes, one of which concerns what it means for humanity to be fractured into multiple offshoots. The premise bears some resemblance to The Schismatrix, but the concept is handled in an original and compelling manner. Simply put, the story takes place amidst a fascinating technological and social milieu, which even the most seasoned science fiction reader will find thought provoking.This is an impressive debut, and the novel would make even a seasoned author proud. At the same time, Künsken still has at least a little more room to grow as a writer. The emotional highs and lows lack just a slight bit of punch compared to those elicited by some more experienced authors (but only by the very very good ones!), and the themes are not plumbed with quite the same depth and nuance as they almost surely will be in Künsken's future novels.Ultimately, this "criticism" amounts to a belief that the very best parts of the novel, which this reader enjoyed very much, could have been just a tiny bit better. These are very small quibbles. The Quantum Magician is an excellent book, and one which any fan of heist stories, compelling characters, or thought-provoking speculative fiction will greatly enjoy.

In The Quantum Magician, the author, Derek Künsken, speculates on what happens when humans can massively alter their bodies and biology. In the Quantum Magician the plot examines how being an altered person effects the individuals in the story. They are people who were altered from birth and had little choice in what they became. Sometimes the characters are both abhorrent and tragic. In other cases they are struggling to find a path in life that is rewarding.All of this is wrapped around a plot involving a "con", a complex plot to smuggle a fleet of military starships through a wormhole (a black hole like construct that connects two distant points in space).Some reviewers have complained that the books is too larded with scientific references. I didn't find this the case. There are some references to popular quantum theory (entangled particles play a part), but the book is much easier to read than Hannu Rajaniemi Quantum Thief novels [https://www.amazon.com/Quantum-Thief-Jean-Flambeur-Book-ebook/dp/B004ULPVN6]I found the Quantum Magician a memorable book that I think about after I have finished it. To me this is the mark of a good novel. I look forward to the sequels.
This is a solid book and worth reading. I teetered between three and four stars and tipped down because it's not a great, lose-yourself sort of read and I think higher ratings go for that sort of experience.The characters are a little thin, the dialogue a bit stilted in places, but the character premises are interesting as is the overall idea. Perhaps a sequel will address the faults I see and expand in the strengths.My thanks to the author for several hours of enjoyable reading.
How often do I encounter truly unique world building combined with a great story and top notch writing craft? Rare indeed. Yet here it is, in simply the best sci-fi novel I've read in many years.A robust exploration at the intersection of quantum mechanics and genetic engineering sets the stage, while wonderfully flawed and capable main characters make there way towards goals they did not even know they had. And one heck of a beautiful love story as well. Wow. Great stuff.Quantum Magician indeed!
There are a few typos - mostly words that run together, and some strangely crafted sentences - but this high-tech/ hard-SciFi heist is terrific. It brings together a crew of apparent misfits, led by the impossibly competent and irresistibly enjoyable Belisarius Arjona.Set in a future timeline far enough upstream for wormdrive space travel and entire casts of genetically modified humans, the stage bounces around a number of planets and habitats (I liked that most orbit red dwarves, as they are way more common than stars like ours, so it's more likely).Like all good heist stories, there are layers to the con, and Bel is smart enough to keep track of multiple threads of extremely complex lies spread across multiple parties.There is lots going on in this novel, including subtle and gentle contemplation of the nature of humanity. But that doesn't get in the way of what is a tense and complex story. Will they or won't they, that is the question!Definitely worth a read if you enjoy a high-tech who dunnit, and there is scope for a sequel. Here's hoping...
I love hard sci-fi, but this book was just dragging along and couldn't hold my attention. I kept thinking there were other books out there that were so much better, so eventually gave it up. It's very rare I don't finish a book. The basic idea was good. I liked the main character with his quantum brain, and all the things he could do. The book just didn't flow right or something for me.
