Review

"The bright and cheerful illustrations draw heavily on Matisse's drawings, paintings, and collages. Facts about the artist's life and style are also skillfully woven into the story and illustrations. Whether in an art-themed storytime or one-on-one sharing, readers will find this book uplifting."—School Library Journal, February 2008

(back cover) When Monique, a young visiting nurse, steps into the home of an elderly patient, she finds herself in rooms filled with the most vivid colors she has ever seen. Her patient is the artist Henri Matisse, one of the greatest colorists in the history of art. Though they become friends, life's circumstances send them each in different directions until they meet again several years later. It is this second encounter that inspires them to begin an extraordinary and creative project. The result is the dazzling Matisse Chapel that stands today in southern France--the artist's final masterpiece. Matisse the King of Color is one more title in author and illustrator Laurence Anholt's series of stories about world famous artists and the young people who knew them. I got this as a gift for my niece who is 5 and she loved it, we spent some time after going through the book looking at some of Matisse's art online. This is a great way to introduce a child to art and I was so impressed with her reaction to it that I ordered a few more of the books in this series for Christmas gifts for her. She's now asking to go to a museum to see the real thing. If that's not a great review of a book like this, I'm not sure what would be.

Fabulous book! My girls, 6 and 3, LOVE it. I think the story is very sweet, and I also like that my older one seems to be inspired to create something after we read it. Soon after we bought the book, we made tissue paper "stained glass windows," which ended up being beautiful as well as fun to make. We might check out the other Anholt books in this series.

I am a teacher in Sydney Australia.I read this book to a composite grade one/two class last year and they absolutely loved it. The illustrations are wonderful. I would thoroughly recommend this book to any teacher in Grades K-6. I am planning to read it to my Kindergarten class later in the year. I also purchased Vincent van Gough by Brad Buck and Joan Holub [Smart About Art Series] and was extremely happy with this purchase also. So I am planning on buying the 'Henri Matisse' book in the same series as it will be a perfect complement to 'Matisse the King of Colour' [Anholt's Artists Books for Children's Series].It was a great lead up to the study of collage in our art lessons.

We love these stories for our kids that have some of the history and paintings of widely embraced artists

I bought this book for my second-grade grandson because the writing is good and the illustrator also did a good job. Quite often I have refrained from buying a book because I didn't like the art work. This book, focusing on Matisse's nurse and the work he did for the chapel of her convent in southern France, is a fine way of introducing the child to a famous artist. My grandson enjoyed the story.

This book about Henri Matisse is a great summary of this artist which I plan to share with my 5th grade students to help them become inspired to create their own paper cutout collages. It is well written with beautiful pictures, both of which captivate the interest of my students. So glad I found it since most of the other books about Matisse are written for the adult reader. This truly fits my needs.

Loved this book. Anholt brings the masters to life in his delightful stories. My students are drawn to his books.

After visiting the Matisse museum in Nice, France, I got this book. Such a beautiful story and a great gift for a little one.
